WARNING- See if you will ever buy an Ultrafire after seeing this.....

Ok guys. I have no idea what just happened. I opened it up and did not find a smaller cell. I found this black stuff wrapped in paper like sushi.

I was going to take it out to show you guys, but as i was taking it out is started SPARKING A SMOKING so i was like F*** DAT!

So i put it in a glass jar with insulation and threw it in the dumpster. SCARED THE CRAP OUTA ME!

What was that. Did i destroy a GOOD battery?

Edit: I think i took apart a good battery :(

You shorted the cell when taking it apart.

To anyone else that wants to rip open cells, discharge them first. All the way. Then leave a 100ohm resistor across the terminals for a day to totally kill it. This will eliminate most of the stored chemical energy and help ensure things don't blow up.
 
Yes I have gads a first hand experience with this kind of battery before, only I got a tiny lipo-pack cell in mine.
maybe 200mAh if that... This was the same battery that exploded in my charger back in ~2007.
Exactly identicle to what ARG found in his 18650.

I can't believe how many shops sell these batteries here in Korea, especially when 2800-3000mAh Samsung batteries are readily available and actually real.

Yes that was a legit Li-Ion cell. Doesnt mean it was a "good" battery though, I mean Ultrafire takes used laptop cells from EVERYWHERE and rewraps them as "new" and the worst part is you are not guaranteed to get two cells that match, thus it is DANGEROUS to use these cells. You need to have matching cells for a multiple cell application, if your laser takes one cell then its not dangerous (there is no mixing of cells)

That's normal IIRC.

I think this only applies to ultrafires that have the label of the ones in the OP, did you rip open one with a blue rapper?
 
So this mostly applies to 18650 batteries right? Because I do get a solid 30 minutes of use from my 1.4 watt 445 using 2 TrustFire 18350's, which from what I gather is a normal run time. Not saying that I don't trust them not to catch fire (see what I did there?)

Nope it was an ultrafire red wrapper that claimed 3000mah and was suspiciously light...

I dont think its just the 3800mAh+ cells. I think crapfire did it with a lot of the cells based on actual 18650 availability. There was a good photo on CPF that showed a manufacture sorting out cells that could be reused as "new" cells. I'd have to see if I can dig it up again.

Afaik it only was with the 18650s and this is due to the high demand of them in not only flashlights, laser, computers and now vapors. When you think of it, the 16340s were only used in what old school cameras? How many people use those nowadays? Every camera has their own battery pack.
 
Has anybody taken apart the 18650 ultrafire with the blue cover on them?
 
Wrapper doesnt matter, its made in the same factory and all it is, is shrink wrap. They pu whatever shrink wrap on whichever battery they want. 2000-5000mAh all can have the same crap inner cell. Wrap doesnt make the cell, the crap under it does!
 
Ah... The Almighty S***Fire.

That goes on to how easily you can grab the ignorant customers; hooker, line and, sinker. Probably it should be more approriately relabeled to "GrenadeFire" because all it do is going KA-BOOM even as much when you twitch your eyelash, and this also is the reason I always buy genuine batteries by themselves, no BMS, whenever I build my own pack (I rarely trust the assembled pack - maybe they could be cheap-a**ed BoomFire batteries in there).

Weird how all these *Fire brands work. I bought some grey Trustfire 18650's from DX many years back and they're still going strong. Probably fake capacity ratings as usual, but no where near as bad as those striped UltraFire cells. I tell people to avoid those striped ones at all costs. And by all costs I mean paying to ship them back to where they friggin came from :p

I also have the grey ones from a few years back. mine didn't last more than a few cycles.
