New 9mm 445 diodes

Thanks for the fast reply. +1 I thought the thick lens was for beam correction prior to focusing lenses. I read back many posts and didn't see why but I didn't want to seat the 9mm until I knew more.
Do I mount that big ass lens into a focus assembly instead of the other available lenses? Does this diode exhibit the "fold back" in power as current increases?

Mike you want to bin this diode. You might get a beast for efficiency you might not however as these have substantial cost you want what the diode will be at its most happy for current set.

You will notice while binning a drop in current vs power output so yea that's the fold back as you put it. I have three builds one was very efficient the other on par with others here.

Long ago, I built up an SAIK using an M140 diode and two DrLava v5 drivers. I set them to 1.9 amps total.

Tonight, I tested the laser at 1.8 Watts out then took out the Aixiz module and stuffed your 9mm diode assy into it. I used the "caged" lens mounted in your housing. I needed to remove 0.005" off your copper mount to fit my heatsink! I did not change the current setting.
I got about 2.45 Watts and the beam appears to have better quality. HoHum!!!
Someday, I'll open it up and jack the current a bit more but for now, I guess I can live with 2+ Watts........☺☺☺ Thanks for the help.

PS: When I get my new BenBoost drivers from Matt, I have a smaller housing and will mount up the other diode. I may adjust the drivers a bit for more current. It will be hell on an 18650 cell.

I like how you mounted the drivers here. Might try that little clip there.:wave:
 
That little clip is a piece of soft shim copper
soldered to a copper gas check and glued
to the housing.

I need to find a good source for small bits of copper lol. Or grab a piece of reasonably high gauge copper sheet metal and cut it up...

The point in the front is not actually a heatsink. Its a very large focus adapter I had custom made by FlaminPyro.

Its one of my favorite lasers because it looks downright dangerous :D

Did anyone look at the facet on a diode that died? IS the facet cracked or did the wire bonds blow? I was thinking a little surgery might be able to put one or more additional gold wires in to let you up the current even more if the problem is the wire bonds and not the actual diodes.

I have a wire bonder at work and could also try replacing the existing with heavier gold wires. It's not as hard as it might seem. For that matter it could be replaced by a foil that is solid instead of four wires.
 
What do you guys think is the highest safe current if you put in a full copper tec cooled heatsink?

I suggested 2.8A for 3.5w from some diodes.Is it realistic?
I really want to build fucking 3.5w!:D

I think 2.5A is the best, I have gone over but got no more power
 
2.2A is the highest I recommend right now anything over I would assume shortened life.:beer:
 
Well 2.5A has not been tested on the long run right? If you want to play safe i would say 2.2A.

2.5A will probably degrade the diode pretty fast, the effects wont be seen as much in pointers since they are not used as much.
With about 20 hours of use on an A140 running at 1.8A mine dropped 20% in output power. I expect there would be similar results from running these at 2.2A, 2.5A would probably wear it down pretty fast, but there has been little said on the topic.

the diodes I use are set at 2.2A from the factory so 2.5A should be ok if you keep the run time under 60Sec. they should last a long time if you have a good heatsink I lot of people use the wrong heatsink you need the back of the diode to touch the heatsink new 445nm 650nm 638nm heatsink for cree C8 Q5 5.6mm and 9mm 445 and more - YouTube look at this video of my large heat and small one that you can put in a bigger heatsink new small 9mm and 5.6mm heatsink made in the USA - YouTube it is heat that kills the diode more amps more heat ,that is why you need a better heatsink
