What is the average power of these. My first did 3+w easy. The following 3 I have tried have had a tuff time seeing much over 2.2.
 
I tell my customers they will fall on average 2.6-3W @ 2.3A with a G-2.:beer:
 
The last 10 or so I have tested at 2.2A and using a G-2 lens have averaged about 2.7W.
 
Does anyone here know if there is anything posted anywhere on the best method to remove the lens holder from these diode cans? I tried to search using both ways and come up empty handed. I was thinking of using a Dremmel with a cutting disk but a am really concerned about getting any debris on my window. Any good tips or suggestions are appreciated. A link to a post about this would be awesome.

I used some needle nose pliers and carefully snapped it free, one leg at a time. The metal is really fragile. Removed the lens the same way.

Is there any practical way to use the housing from a typical 3-element lens to hold these stock 9mm diode lenses?

I just took out the lenses and replaced it by the one comming with the diode. The upper two lenses were a bit thinner than the buttom one. And the diode lens just fits where the buttom lens is placed. Later I shortened the 3-element lens housing by cutting it in half, but this isn´t needed for proper operation.
 
@ RHD. Yes I've done it. Just use a drill press and drill out the inside of the lens holder. Go in from the open end and be careful not to go through the lip mount at the base. Then find a section of radio antenna with an OD of approx 6.2 mm and ID of 6 -6.1 mm and cut that to the correct length. You can then drop the lens in and use the antenna section to hold it firmly in place when you screw down the retaining ring that comes with the 3 element. Just be very careful to drill straight and dont over tighten! :beer:

Edit: Forgot to mention if you want to get the max poss power widen the hole at the base a little. IIRC the lenses are 6.2 - 6.3 mm (?) so you could go up to around 6 mm for the hole. I cant remember the exact sizes so don't quote me and preferably measure it first! ;)

There are a couple problems but it can be done. The seat is not shaped correctly for this lens so it will not sit perfectly straight making the beam come out at an angle. Then if you don't tighten it enough it can come loose frequently and if you tighten it too much you risk cracking the lens as the seat puts pressure on the lens in a way that it is not meant to be.:)

You sell them on their own, don't you?
 
I do offer the holders by themselves. When I first started selling G-2's that is what I did but kept getting complaints of loose lenses or crocked beam and the people with the loose ones would try to make them real tight and crack. I quickly realized I needed a better solution.:)
 
I have made two and both work flawlessly. I actually use them for my 6.0 mm red G2 lenses now as they just fit. Unfortunately the ones both DTR and Ricktrent sell don't fit the smaller red G2 lenses, so they are not an option for these. :beer:
