I never thought a photo of a laser diode could be be inherently "gross"... until this:

LOL,
The goop was there when I got it. I wiped off enough to see the "barcode."
The red ink is because when I got it, I thought that I was getting an M140 and the 9mm so the other diode was a mystery diode to me.
I didn't realize it would be obvious which was which once I got them magnified, so I marked it with a red marker to make sure I didn't mix up two nearly identical diodes.
If one had been an M and the other was an H it might have been a good idea, but instead it looks like it was used in a (censored) with stirrups and (censored) at the (censored) (censored)!
Hope that was ok to post!
Good photo's. Try to get close as possible to the subject. Set the focus of the macro lens at the minimum and move the camera until it is tack sharp.
The light could be little better by adding a white sheet of paper to the other side of the subject. It will illuminate the dark shadows by reflecting the light from the lightsource.
Blord, thanks for the tips. I was surprised I wasn't getting larger pics. I started with a 100mm macro, then added several of these
Amazon.com: Kenko DG Auto Extension Tube Set for the Canon EOS AF Mount.: Camera & Photo until I had all three stacked for 68mm of extension tube on top of the 100mm.
I didn't want to do the 50mm reversed because of not wanting to get dust in the 50mm f/1.4 but I do have the 58/58 reverse coupler if that will work better.
I'm going to play more. Maybe I just wasn't getting close enough to the diodes and was taking these in "normal" portrait mode?
I have a decent manfrotto tripod, but it isn't very precise on vertical adjustment and I almost dropped the lens straight down on a diode at one point. I better put a uv filter or something on it to protect it. I almost never use a filter because I always have lens hoods and am careful and I hate to lose a stop and possibly put cheap glass in front of my L lens, but when you have a heavy camera/lens on a tripod aimed straight down towards the ground, it is a whole different world.
Thank you very much for the tips.
I want to re-iterate again - anyone wanting REALLY good macro, Blord is your man and if the time and slight extra expense of shipping something small like this to Europe are worth it for your project then please feel free to use him. Or if you are on that side of the pond and need good macro shots, he is the man!
I'm just offering to do this because I can turn it around fast in the US and send back cheaply to help out and I'm having fun learning to do macro better. But I don't want to step on his toes or do something that he would like to be doing. I DO very much appreciate your tips Blord.
