A-140 vs. M-140 vs. H1600

I was not convinced that the H and M were any different but with all of RHD's posts on his I had received a lot of requests on them. So I picked up one projector and I am giving them away for those that want to contribute and test them. Everybody that has asked about them I have said not to buy them if you are not willing to pay extra for something that may not be any better unless you are wanting to be a tester. I can say the price would go up considerably if I planned to sell them on a regular basis.

A search shows the H1600 projectors are coming in at about $1735. That gives a base cost of $54.21 each then after shipping and PP fees the base cost goes to $58.46.

On another note I just ordered more M140's but they were out and are sending me M150's this time so I will get a chance to get some of them in our hands but again I don't expect anything special out of them like the A150's that kiyoukan was referring too.:beer:

I really don't know that I yet have a personal perspective on H vs M, and whether they're the same / different.

In fact, if you search the forum, you'll probably fine me yoyo-ing on that question. I initially expected that diodes were diodes, and that KasEO just had one big batch in their factory that they would work through, eventually getting newer diodes placed in all of their projectors. But there are two or three observations that are slowly leading me to believe that diodes MAY actually be binned per projector:

1) KasEO clearly intermixes different batches of diodes within a single array. We didn't know this until some of the work BobHaha and I did recently here. BobHaha submitted 12 of the 2D codes found on diodes from the same array. It's very clear that there are three groupings of related serial numbers. In one case, two of the diodes actually have consecutive serial numbers. The fact that three separate distinct diode batches would be mixed within one projector likely indicates some conscious effort to bin diodes and mix them to achieve some particular lumen output.

2) I tested three H-series diodes, pushed to 2.5A here. Lazeerer did the same with three M-series diodes in response, here. The H-series diodes were all A-OK up to 2.5A. Of the M-series diodes, one died at 2.3A, one dimmed at 2.3A, and one test was stopped at 2A because Lazeerer felt that the diode would have diode had it been pushed further. Though I'm not sure the power outputs were any better, the H-series was certainly, in these tests, able to handle current a lot better than the M-series.

3) There is a very very clear inverse relationship between diode efficiency and wavelength, with the H-series diodes. I'm not ready to say that this isn't the case with M-series diodes yet, because I haven't tested enough of them for wavelength. I will say that I didn't notice this phenomena among the M-series diodes I've tested. But again, that hasn't been very many, and at least one set of M-series diodes I've tested has potentially been from an older M-series array.
 
If im looking to buy a m140 diode with the lowest Nm i can find who do i go to?
I want to have a deep blue in my projector so are there any 439nm diodes?

If you want lower wavelength, you're going to be much better off sticking with A-series diodes, if you can find them. And preferably A140 over A130.
 
i just sold over 24 of them but i still have 3 on hand.
I wanted a m-140 for it longer life, but i also want the blue to be as deep as possible.
Im looking into using a PBS cube to add in a 12X 405nm running at some current to help deepend the color.
I am also mixing in some 659nm red with my 635nm to make it even brighter.

I probably would've gotten one then. :(

At those prices, he was giving them away. I took several off his hands! :D hoping for some high mW blue builds soon.
 
I have some 445nm diodes left from the last A140V series projector I purchased, and they have that distinct circle mark above the square bar code matrix. I didn't look at any under high magnification but it's fairly obvious after seeing Dagiun and Blord's photos. I don't have a diode can remover to verify the insides, but the diodes, of several I've tested, seem to have outputs on par with the M140's. Is there a place to look to find when the projector was manufactured? At first look, I didn't notice anything with a manufactured date on it.

Ahhhhhh! Thor = Thorlabs ;)

Yes. That is the tool I have

It takes about 10 seconds to de-can a 5.6mm diode with it :)

Are you using a 50mm turned around to get macros? If so, that is amazing work!

I have a 7D with a 100mm macro if I can help. I don't want to step on Blords toes in any way, but if being in the us will save shipping I can take some good macro shots. I'll post some to show.

Plus I'm just looking for a reason to get the L version:D
