I was recommending the linear regulator just for simplicity. It might have a heat issue inside the Aixiz module, but a type of heatsink can easily be made to mount to a modified Aixiz module. Or at least that's how I see it.

I would highly recommend the NCP3065 for the more advanced user. It can do boost or buck.

I found that the optics inside can collimate all the diodes into a fat beam like a CVL. Pretty sick- 18W of average power output in an inch diameter blue beam. The two optics form a keplerian collimator- with a third correction optic you could use these for serious beam displays without a hitch. Also the mfr of the blue diodes seems to be the same vendor that supplies diodes to the infamous PHR violets.

On another note, the good the bad and the ugly about the projectors:

The good, my hunch was right- these are by far the best eye candy projectors in their price-range. The color saturation is similar to high end LED projectors, but these are unmatched in the blues and greens. Animated movies like Avatar and Alice in Wondeland play in an almost theatrical quality. Getting the white balance right is hell though.

From the gageteers prospective, these have all the dichros to combine your lasers into a modulated white beam in addition to many neat optics that can be re-purposed should the unit fail. Odds are you'll still have 18 remaining good blue diodes to play with too. The blue diodes collimate with normal optics too, it seems they have a MQW structure and build similar to a Long die red, but in gallium nitride instead of gallium aluminum arsenide. A normal plastic axiz lens works fine to about 300mw- above that it would melt if some dirt got on it. The best lens I found for giving the best divergence and power throughput surprisingly is the missile laser collimator lens, seems the yellowish AR coating for 904nm IR has a keyhole near the 445nm these lasers operate at- go figure!

The bad: I noticed several serious design flaws in these projectors, first is the one that makes them a nice source of parts- the diode are not tightly mounted- the red 10W LED is even worse. The phosphor-converter is very inefficient, like 10%or so. I assume with use this thing will bleach and burn out, even worse still is it exposes the optical path to dust- for occasional use at parties meetings and venues it's not an issue but long term use in a bar or nightclub- forget it. The other issue is the lack of protective and charge balancing parts in the diode strings, this means if one diode fails, it will take 5 diodes with it. The diodes have a boron nitride based thermal joint compound on them, which is not uniformly applied on all diodes. To make this worse- they do make a lot more heat than the compact design leads on, as we know heat is bad for laser diodes. Bottom line: if you are using it dayly as a projector, that 3 year warrenty WILL BE USED

The ugly: These are serious class IV devices, The reflection off of glass at 500mw is close to 60mw- get your self some glasses one eyeshot = instant blindness. the combined beam of all 24 will smolder and ignite stuff too.

My guinea pig diode was decanned when a speck of dust landed on the window and caused the diode to start melting it.

After decanning the diode I tested went to 1150mw at 1.2A, and began mode shifting, but no sign of COD yet, i think there is not much need to go beyond this; you should be able to run safely at around 750-800mw for maximal lifetime to power ratio. The extra good news, these diodes are built very similar to a PHR diode, they seem to have a very high reverse withstand voltage to boot, zero leakage to 14V reverse biased. This means that accidentally hooking them up backwards will not likely damage them.

As expected thermal management is a serious concern, the brass axiz modules are not enough heat sinking, they will need some sort of decent heat-sink, preferably cooled by a small fan. As neat as these are, they are not ideal for pointer like devices for this reason as well as simple safety issues. Tomorrow i'll make a cooling unit based on a laptop cooling heat pipe assy and test it at different temperatures.

The missile lens is a lens that I used to sell on ebay, I still have some available, i am selling them on amazon and ebid. One big warning is they will mostly be suitable for lab and serious beam show lasers, they are quite large by axiz standards an inch by 1/4 inch in and 1/2 inch out, but are a must if you prefer long range collimation over narrow beam diameter. Note, I cannot take paypal, they banned me permanently because of a "credit check"

About the lens... Is it in a threaded nut? I want to know if I can focus it. Does it come with a module or something?

thanks for the info, chris!

..what came to my mind: remember those 12x BR sleds? they have a "beam circularizer" cube right in front of the diode..
unfortunately I never got any of those, just the sled without that cube.
could someone check if this cube helps anything on correcting the fast axis? it may then be tiny enough to mount between the diode and a long-fl-lens, or after the lens?

Those cubes was integrating a slow axis corrector (not fast axis, it was a negative cylindrical lens), and a prefocusing lens ..... good way for get a circular shape for the focusing elements, but also causing a lot of power loss (in the sleds, you lost at least half of the power from the diode, through the various optics, gratings and diaphragms ..... it's not important in a sled, but for our hobby, is not the better thing, i think ;))
