Your first thoughts when you saw the 1W 445nm diode for $50 thread

Not to be rude, but....

WAYNE--Was that for me??--hak

I just heard about them today, and I'm still in awe and I want one. You miss out on things when you don't post here much...lol. I see there have been four sale threads and I can't find any current threads, will there be any more for sale soon? I probably need to search more.

I'm sure that there will be (not by me), but there are none up right now.

You know, you could run one as well as anyone else ;)

Peace,
dave

^Anyone can run one, and I'm taking a break.. too much going on in my life ATM. I think we've satisfied the initial rush now. Round 4 is my last, at least for awhile.

I've been saying from the start of this that I feel like $50 is too inexpensive for that kind of power, but there are other sources who started with this before I did selling for the same price so that's where my GBs have stayed as well. I've heard several good ideas about how to circumvent the possibility of these diodes being used by some careless n00b and causing damage, everything from being required to fill out a questionnaire to having to be a vet to buy them. We might need to place further effort into developing such a system.

In a couple of months we may see 3-400mW 445nm cheap pen lasers from China for like $55 or less?

I thought I'm a lucky guy :)
blue is my favorite color and I would have bought a DPS 473nm very soon for much more money

I thought, shit, I don't have batteries host, goggles or drivers for that beast. Now I'll have to wait for someone to sell built ones >.>

If that happens I have a bad feeling that stricter laser laws will be coming soon after... If irresponsible people get ahold of these someone will go blind.

^This

Hence why lots of us are becoming concerned with the whole idea:(

I just picked up one over at PL, I'm still in awe over the whole thing. Blue just went from most expensive to cheapest. A week ago We would happily buy 5mW of blue for $300, now we have the price tackled to 5¢ per mW!

The death of the high powered blu-rays right here?

I really hope eBay prices don't get brought to dangerously low prices with competition...as awesome as this laser diode is, it may very well take its toll on the laser hobby.

I have a couple diodes coming........ Can I pop a balloon with it? Maybe light a sharpied match ???? This is important stuff we all need to know.

right .........

My though is, well.. all the work and money I spent fixing my 500mw melles griot blue dpss laser.. Now 1W of blue- sure a little bluer, and multimode, for only about $50.00 OMG- UFB! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, THIS IS A JOKE- RIGHT? Nichia was selling these at somewhere in the ballpark of $2K a pop, than $450 on ebay, now $50 or less?!

I bit the bullet and bought a couple projectors, one to harvest and one to use as intended to replace my old projector that has a failing lamp, anyone who had to replace a bulb for like $400 will know what a PITA it is... Maybe if i harvest creatively i could still use the harvested projector as a monochrome red for some cool stage effects too :D

I thought the the 12X's were cool enough for laser display- If these stay stable at say 750mw, than I'll feel like a shaved tail indeed. LOL

Trip down memory lane...I think this post was from 2008.

Am I the only one that thinks $2500 isn't that ridiculous for a 500mW 445nm diode? Think of how much you would pay for a 500mW 473nm DPSS blue. A lot more than that... I think $2500 might get you 100mW of 473nm in a high quality lab module... if that. Now, realize that this can be put in a hand-held because of it's relative simplicity (as long as it's a standard 5.6mm or 9mm diode). How much is a 30mW 473nm RPL? Like $1200 bucks? So for just a hair over twice that you get over 10 times the power. Sounds good to me :D :D :D
