Why Children shouldn't be allowed to own a laser

That's true, besides how would a kid order anything online and get it without his parents knowing? Also how would a kid hide something like a laser, especially at these power levels. I know some kids will find workarounds to a lot of stuff, but parents should not let those workarounds be there!

My kids only get to use my lowest powered pointers while I supervise.

I do "demonstrations" for them frequently, but it's hands off for the kids.

I pride myself on the way that i still play with toys, it's just the toys are a bit more dangerous. I'm 17. To be honest, most of us here are using lasers as toys in the general sense. Playthings. I think that while there is a strong correlation with age, there'll always be stupid adults and intelligent kids, both of which will suffer (or in the case of stupid adults, induce suffering) due to how the regulations work.

It's not a tool since it's not for a functional purpose, it's for a laugh. And it's not a weapon since (hopefully) nobody uses it to cause harm. We're all (as far as i'm concerned) big kids playing with big kids' toys.

My sisters friend, being 8 or 9, asked if she could play with it. I said no of course explaining that it can be very dangerous. So she says this with a cute little smile: "If it doesn't burn a hole in the wall then it's okay for my eyes."

I would've told her: "Wanna see this laser burn a hole through stuff?", told her to put on a pair of laser safety glasses and fired the laser against a light brown carton box. Cue a burned hole in the carton box and a 9 years old girl scared out of her mind.

When I was 11-13 I was 3rEet on aol2.5-3.5. I had so many phish,cc,ssn, it was crazy. And no my parents had no idea anybody could do that stuff, kids can hide anything from you easily and buy whatever they want easily.

Woot to all the other washed up mid 20 somthing aol programers on here.
This forum seems like the kind of place we would end up.

That's great, and I hope your parents would have their asses handed to them if you were ever caught engaging in illegal activities. That is the fate that should await those "parents" who neglect their charges. Too many of these "parents" are not doing their job, and are causing the rampant degeneration of society. We need some accountability.

I have no problem with the idea that minors can and should be able to enjoy experimenting with lasers. It's like allowing minors to shoot guns. All of these activities can be fun and safely performed with proper supervision and education. In fact, I'd say it's even better to actively engage kids and teens with such activities, in order to instill in them a sense of responsibility and awareness.

Unfortunately, as I've stated before, many of the "parents" are not taking up their responsibilities. Hell, some "parents" are less responsible than their children. Regardless, it is the parents who must suffer the consequences for the actions of the humans they are legally obligated to manage until adulthood. If parents don't want that responsibility, DON'T HAVE KIDS.

Yes! Definitely! That's a point i was trying to get across but couldn't put into words!

But i have mixed feelings about this. I agree in principle, but i'm a psychology student and in psychological experiments we have a principle called informed consent. It's self-explanatory really, before people participate in experiments for ideal ethics they need to give, not just consent, but INFORMED consent. Meaning they know EXACTLY what they're getting themselves into.
This can't always be given with every aspect of life. Many experiments in psychology rely on deception, for example, in experiments into conformity. Having children is one of those things i don't think any non-parent can give informed consent on. While i'm 17 and not likely to have children any time soon, I don't think anyone can possess totally informed consent on parenting because nobody knows how difficult it'll be.

A second issue is the "DON'T HAVE KIDS" part. Strong argument in favour of abortion. I'm also strongly in favour of abortion for a wide range of reasons, but i think more children than we realise are accidental. This means people didn't have a lot of choice and saw giving birth to the child* as the lesser of two evils.

*i usually replace the word "child" with another word or series of words, but i won't for a number of reasons.

Finally: someone stop me if i'm starting to hijack.

Here here! A few years ago a friend of mine warned me that he believed there was an 80% that me & my girlfriend at the time would break up within a month, a 60% chance that she'd only wanted to be with me in order to make a new friend (or similar) and a 55% chance that she'd just wanted someone to go with her to the MCM Expo (a convention we go to).

Two years later we're still together.

Tbh, i think there's a trend for it that's been either started or strongly supported by L from Death Note. But L is a fictional character with a superhuman mind, most people can't pull it off well with figures that are even vaguely correct, let alone do it with the same splendour as L.

You cant totally blame the parents for everything, while alot of times it is the parents fault, and they lack just that, parenting. But others do try their best. You cannot possibly supervise your kids 24/7, sooner or later its time for school, or bed, or you have to work when they are off from school. Kids today are smart, and know how to get around stuff. I say this because my parents where very strict, and tried their asses off to get me to stay in school, and do work, and be an overall productive member of society, but they more they did, the more I did to get around it all. When I was in middle school they wouldnt let me listen to 'parental advisory' CDs, but instead of not doing it, I was giving my lunch money to fellow class mates for burnt copys of the CDs their parents bought for them. When I was in HS, my parents were so carefull about me not getting a chance to try smoking, even going as far as not letting me hang out with ppl they didnt know the parents of. Well my first smoke came from a pack I found next to a bench in the park THEY took me to. Next they put an alarm system in so I couldnt sneek out at night, well during the day when they werent home, id take the batts out of the alarm sensor on the door I would use to get out, they were none they wiser, and if they would ask id say 'how could I have with the alarm system'
My point is sooner or later someone, anyone or anything will allow your children to do things you dont want them to. You search your kids rooms for smokes and drugs, but dont realise the high powerd laser on the dresser, you cant watch for every little thing, it cant be done. You have to educate the kids as best as possible about what to watch out for, but even that, you cant teach them everything, they just dont understand, like the girl with the laser, she figures if it will burn walls it will burn her eyes, she doesnt understand how the eye works and why the laser hurts it.
Heck, while your reading my post, your kids could be in the other room on a computer you dont even know about, using money you didnt know they had, to order god knows what off the internet.

Although tbh, my parents have never been all that strict so maybe i lose tricky kid points for that. My decision about rules myself is that i follow them as long as i see a good logical reason as to why i should follow them. As soon as the parents can't give me a reason i don't comply.

your doubting me? Go ahead and survey the whole forum, and find out for yourself, just because your older, doesnt nessasarally mean everyone is just as old as you or older. It may not be a 100% fact, it could be a little more, or a little less, but I'm confident it's in that range.
