So it's an LCD, that blocks some of the light to shape it into a more circular beam? :o Wow, it's interesting in any case. I would love to see it in action.

Didn't even notice it in my PS3 sleds untill now... EDIT: Nope, it's not in mine... I don't get it. The link is a dissection of the same sled i have. Correction. Found the LCD in one, but not in the other. It has the cable with the IC on it, but it doesn't go anywhere.. :)



And the pictures Jake took yesterday really do look like KES-400A PS3 sleds, and not the X-Box ones..
 
This is positively fascinating. I'm going to have to take a leap and buy one. I know that eventually they will run out of stock on the old PHR-803T and we'll be left with nothing but a ps3 diode. but for that price it's not a bad deal at all.
 
as of the LCD window- i found one in the 6x burner as well.
has anyone measured the voltage across these diodes at various currents? if they match drlava's graph of the 6x diode, it'd be a nice indicator of chip length being close or identical to 6x burners. Such measurements have to be done at the same temp drlava did them, since the voltage drop drops significantly as the die warms up.
 
Well, I couldn't stand it any longer. I just ordered one of these drives for $10 + shipping on ebay ;D It says "working condition is not guaranteed" so lets just hope the diode is in there. Keeping my fingers crossed that I get the "good" drive. 8-)
 
Well, for $10 i guess it's worth the risk... As long as the good diode is inside, you don't have to worry about the working condition. I've gotten the best diodes out of broken and returned DVDs that were out of warranty. And if it's the "weak" one, you still get close to 25mW of 405 out of it.


I just ordered three more sleds from psxboy. Couldn't wait anymore. Looks like they will contain the good diodes. Fingers crossed.
 
Hey Guys,

Did I read somewhere that you can get these drives at your local BestBuy or something?
I may have to run up the road to see.
I want one, but with all you guys ordering, with my luck, they will run out of the good ones and send me an old low powered drive.
I would rather put my hands on one at the store.

The problem is, that the old is the high powered one. The new sled has a weaker diode.

psxboy could eventually run out of these sleds, but i hope it's not too soon. If they replace it with the newer model, the model number will be different, so you would know.

But if you go to bestbuy, just look at the version numbers on the drives, and compare with the pictures in this thread. the 000 would seem to be good, but don't take my word for it. Check for yourself.

The power wasted in the optics is incredibly high, but that is good for us, as it means more powerful diodes! :)

BTW, how did you power it inside the sled? Did you just connect the diode to a driver and measure the output? What was the current that produced this low reading? It's pretty much identical to what was measured with a PS3 Blue Ray reader sled.


I wonder if the reason for the lower power diodes in the new sleds is less losses in the optics? Either that, or they really just stuck in more powerful ones into the old sleds because they didn't have access to the lower power. It would be good to know what current the sleds powers these with during normal operation, but i don't have an x-box to try it on...

OK,

I must have confused myself there again. (not hard to do some days- ;D)
I thought it was the newer drives that had the better diode, but had an older/different version number. (000)
Either way, I know to look for version-000, correct?
I will run up there today an check them out and let you know.

Joe, there is a mixing of older and newer manufacture dates, so it's not clear other than what some website said that the part is the 'older' part. It is true that it's in drives with the 000 hardware version, not 100.
Also, it's possible to check the drive without damaging it, the warranty void sticker inside the cover can be lifted with a light touch from a heatgun and a razor blade.
 
i'll have to snatch up some from psxboy, can't pass up high powered diodes this cheap
 
Best Buy has put all of their XBOX 360 HD add-ons on sale - it' s now $35.00. Better than PSXBOY....if you can find them in stock.

I just got one - and it's the version 000 unit, which should have the higher powered diode in it.

Note that the serial number on the XBOX 360 HD case does not match the serial number of the internal HD-Drive....our numbers we have from before may be misleading.
