The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

Wow, I may have to go pick up a few more and build a few to sell or something to help pay for more lasers now that they are even cheaper.

Update on the lifetime test:
The diode has been on at 90mA for about 28 hours now and is still going strong. Already longer than I thought it would last since it has no proper heatsinking.

While it's great your're performing this lifetime test and I look forward to the result, another factor to consider is the stress thermal expansion on the die during startup. You may want to turn it off, then back on once in a while. In my automated lifetime tests, The diode is turned off and on several times an hour. Typically the failure occurs near one of these turn-on cycles.

Nice! So 80mW @ 90mA is without any optics?

Yeah, it's important to simulate what will happen with it during normal use. I have made improper long term tests in the past, only for a device to "fail" almost instantly in slightly different circumstances (as soon as the customer did something i never expected ::))...

And when i showed my 170mW CNI laser pen to my friend, and he was pointing it around, only to then suddenly start turning it off and on rapidly, i almost hit him. ;D

Yeah, I would certainly do the test differently if it were up to me, but for the use I am investigating, we need constant on data. The company I am doing the testing for is going to be running them almost constantly.

Just ordered one! Lets hope it's the good sled, will probably order more when I get paid. I'll let you know the status when it arrives...

Best Buy has put all of their XBOX 360 HD add-ons on sale - it' s now $35.00.  Better than PSXBOY....if you can find them in stock.

I just got one - and it's the version 000 unit, which should have the higher powered diode in it.

Note that the serial number on the XBOX 360 HD case does not match the serial number of the internal HD-Drive....our numbers we have from before may be misleading.

Good hunting!

Hey,

There isn't a one BestBuy in PA-USA that carries these, or so they say.  >:(

Can you post the Product Number so I have something to work with while trying to talk to these idiots on the phone? Gas is a bit high for me to just drive around all day looking, and as some of you may know, I am down w/ 6 fractured vertebre and 4 more discs blown out, so a bit laid up at the moment.  :'(

Given my luck, I am scared to death of ordering one online, as I already have 4 more low powered BR's left, so I don't need another one, and for sure that is probably what I would get.  ::)

Who could I bribe into picking me up one or two, (two preferably) or from someone who may have ordered a bunch elsewhwere that would do this for me???? I will send the funds right over via Paypal, or other means if necessary???? I can throw a few extra your way for your services.  ;)
(My Kryton is just begging for one of these!  ;D)

Anyone care to help a poor guy out?  8-)

Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. 8-)

Drop me a PM and/or post here if you can help me.  :)

Thanks!
Joe

I don't really care to be honest.  I'm taking up the challenge anyway, regardless of the power so if I get one of these freaks it's only going to be better off for me.  £20 for B-R is good enough for me anyway and if I do get 75mW + out of it I'll be damn happy.

But I understand your point though, already having so many low power diodes anyway.  All I can say is that you'll have to take the risk, by the time people have examined the diodes fully, there may be no more stock... I'm deffinately picking up a few more if I get the right one...

Hi VW,
I know what you mean, most if not all will want to keep what they get just due to the, "I got mine" factor.
I may risk ordering one, but being down w/ little income right now, I have the wife to deal with as well.
I used to wipe my butt w/ 50 bucks, but now it is alot of money to me. Funny how things change.
I have a 20K car deal going on my 69 Charger, but it may be a few more weeks, so I can't count my chickens as they haven't hatched yet.
But figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.
Thanks, Joe

Wow, good luck with that! But yeah, how much did you pay for your other drives? I haven't really looked into them that much, but for a PS3/360 diode I'm only looking at about 10mW - 15mW anyway, so if there's a chance I can almost tripple the ammount, I'm going to take it!

So were you able to determine from the outside of the box if this was going to be the right drive or not?? Does it have the revision # printed on the barcode label or something like that? I can't afford to have to buy one of these doggone things and find out it's not the right one to have to take it back to bestbuy.

AMEN Kenom<
Also, if there is a store product number on it that you can post, that will help in tracking one down greatly.
When you call them, all they say is, "I don't think we carry any of those"
Well, I feel it is there job to go look and find out, but you know we are just dealing w/ some kid making minimum wage who doesn't care to go and find out.
But if I have a stock number, then I can have them punch it into the computer, they may be able to handle that!
Thanks!

I don't know, as I only have the one unit. I can confirm that it does have the PHR-803T sled in it - I have not had the time to harvest it yet.

On the retail box label, I see the following:
Strange numbers at the top: 9Z5-00013
S/N#: 012787372420
Lot#: 0724
WD#: 1094029
Team YSVZ

All with UPC #: 8 82224 37966 3

The receipt has it identified as :
8132095 9Z5-00013
360 HD DVD Player

I suspect that the part number is 9Z5-0013, and the SKU# is 8132095.

Inside, the HD drive was Ver 000 dated May 07.

After going back at some of the earlier numbers posted, it seems that in Sept 06 was when the sled was changed. There are posts from 2 different people that have a high and low powered diode, and both have a sept 06 manufacture date.

We need info from someone with a low-powered diode to report what's on their retail box label in order to determine if there are identifiable differences on the retail packaging.

Edit: Added the best buy SKU and part numbers from the receipt.

9Z5-0013 is the manufacturer's Item number (part number)

Peace,

Yeah, I called with the sku # and asked them if they had them. They didn't. but you can still purchase them from thier website. I however am not all that much interested in taking the risk of buying an unknown drive off bestbuy.com for $49.99 and get only a 10-15mw diode. If it's going to be a used or broken drive from ebay that's a different story. Does anyone know if these units are a basic usb hdd controller? could you swap it out for a Bluray drive and run that off your xbox?

Hey, the usb interconnect in that drive does not have a typical hdd connector, it's some proprietary connector in there. It's possible that the signals are a standard such as serial ata, but don't count on it. The drive itself has a strange connector on it so it also can't be easily used as a bare drive in a system without having the accompanying boards attached.
