What do you guys mean by "it has wings"? The only thing that comes to mind is the odd shape of a multimode beam, but this is single mode.

There is a plethora of typical red output images.
I know what red output looks like. That clearly isn't what I asked. I asked what was meant by the term "wings". I browse the forums nearly all day (for the past few weeks at least), and I have seen many images of red beams/dots, I even searched for "wings" in the forum search, took a quick look around, before asking. Now I must admit, I may not have searched through every page of every result, but being that this is a friendly forum I thought it wouldn't be too unreasonable to simply ask someone to kindly explain it to me. I see I made a terrible mistake in doing this, please forgive me.
You gave me the wonderful advice to "read more, post less", so I took it to heart.
I thought I must have missed something terribly obvious, so my first step was to search on google images the output of lpc 815 / lpc 826/ lpc 836 diodes. But I saw nothing different than usual. Most certainly nothing about wings. I additionally looked up "LPC 826 output" on the forum search, which led to no useful information about "wings". Though I saw it mentioned a few times.
Finally, I got the idea to use the advanced search, and searched for "wings" within the red subforum. After finding nothing in the first few topics that appeared. I eventually found this:

I helpful post by rhd, explaining essentially that the "wings" has to do with the beam quality/shape of multi-mode diodes, as opposed to single mode diodes.
Hmm. This is very odd. Let's compare this to what I wrote:

So I guess my assumption was right in that case.
Maybe it's because I'm still learning, and I'm very sorry about that, but I don't understand why my comment resulted in such an insult for being not only a sincere and polite question, but even mentioning my uneducated guess towards the answer (which, as far as I can tell, is correct). Maybe it's because I don't
read enough.
But can someone please explain to me what makes this diode have "wings" even though it is single mode? I am pretty new here, so I'm sure that's why I'm not familiar with this, but can I please get a straight answer?
