First and Third Person shooter Games thread

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know I took a crack at new The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim game,

And HOLY SH*T it's so damn good, I was having second thoughts about returning to the dorm because I was only playing for maybe 2 hours.

They finally have the combat system perfected.

In Morrowind, you had to equip spells or weapons, in Oblivion you could quick-cast spells with weapons drawn, but here it's so totally another story.

Not to spoil anything major, my sincere advice is to get the game. It's great!

For those of you that already tried it, thoughts?

Played the past 30days: Resistance3, Uncharted3, Arkham City, Skyrim, Forca4 - everyone of them is awesome!

According Skyrim, I loved Oblivion, but Sky is MUCH better - perfect balanced - WEAKENED VAMPIRISM - so much to do i the world!
I´m just a bit disillusioned with the graphics. Played Oblivion with the highest settings Anno 2006.
I´m at level 12 now, specialiced for bowman and single-hand weapons.

Been playing skyrim non stop since yesterday...

The graphics are well... good but not overly impressive.

The game mechanics and balancing are excellent.

While I love it, I'm also a tad disappointed. I'm not all the way through it, but so far the story does not seem as interesting.

The settings, while visually better than the original, are not as grand. There are no massive castles, and at least so far no traveling to other dimensions... hopefully my rating improves as I finish the game, but for the moment I'm only giving it an 8/10.

Pleasant side note... my gtx 460, overclocked quite a bit... is handling the game on ultimate just fine.

Off to spend a few more hours killing dragons now:D

Skyrim is absolutely amazing, but I've never played an elder scrolls game before so I wouldn't know ;)

The last RPG I played was Baulders Gate :D

While I agree that the graphics are not as "pretty" as they could be, one could give the benefit of the doupt to developers and say they were perhaps aiming for more realistic, instead of all blingy graphics.

On my Radeon 4670, it is somewhat playable on maximum resolution of 1680x1050, I guess I'll done the resolution down for maximum smooth gameplay (everything else maxed or almost maxed).

And please don't spoil anything for me either, I'm only level 3 as of yesterday, and will get back to playing only at Thursday :(

Anyway, I sincerely hope that killing dragons isn't forced as much as trailers tend to make it look like, I'd rather not kill such beings, universal portayal of "dragons" makes them look so badass and cool. Feeling sorry for them already, because so far as I've seen, killing a few will be made mandatory.

But, that aside, everything else just kicks ass. My brother is playing a fighter, I'm playing archer/mage combo. Everything from combat mechanics that I've seen so far is polished and perfect.

While I'm not able to play it right now, I'll go listen to the main theme music :D

Frames Per Second = Life

Oh and i like to share my fav. game i played for years on clanbase it's called Urbanterror

It's a Quake 3 MOD and it is still fun to play even after 12 years lol

Here is a short crappy clip with the bugs in the game old but for now a lil review

I'm at level 16, and so far killing two was required by the storyline.

Two more attacked me... I don't take kindly to being attacked:p

The other 4 were just for fun... could have avoided, but I don't share your concerns about killing them.

Generally if you're approaching a dragon lair, it will show up on your HUD/Navigation bar, so I guess you could just turn away from them. Of course IMO those are the best because you get a new word, a soul, and sometimes more. One of the dragons had an undead draugnur priest... killed me three times before I managed to off them both.

I would LOVE to be able to ride one though.... would save tons of time vs running around.

So far a fairly mixed character focused primarily on archery/sneaking/one handed combat:evil:

Hah, YES, I managed to tweak the sh*t out of the game I just installed on my laptop, it's now somewhat playable on my old lappy.

I forced the resolution of 640x480 and managed to turn ALL of the shadows completely off.

Textures and effects are at Medium though, really isn't worth playing a game with all minimum textures. At least that, hell.

So now I'll have my brother send me my save file from home so I can enjoy the game here, albeit not as much as on the REAL PC back home.

So, you don't do much magic? It's my primary focus in RPG games, I always did tons of magic in Morrowind and Oblivion. That, supplemented by Archery for long range.

I've been focusing a lot more on non magical skills. I can incinerate weaker creatures, but for anything strong... sneak attack with the bow, hopefully two shots before I'm seen, another 1-2 before the attacker is on me and after that...dual wield swords. I'm thinking of focusing a bit on illusion magic actually:D

Btw, if you can, get the slow time shout... it's helped me a few times on close calls.

I'm playing at 1920x1080, but reduced some things from ultimate quality, turned down AA to 12 from 16, reduced some view distances, but do run into the occasional problem indoors and in caves... when there is a TON of dust.

Also noticed that the game performs a lot worse the longer it runs... memory leak somewhere for sure:( So I quit and reload the game completely every two hours or so.

On a side note, can't seem to get he hand of the new lockpicking mechanic... had to use a cheat code a few for it:o

Another side note.... the dungeones in skyrim ARE AWESOME.... and I don't get lost in them nearly so much:p

I haven't gotten up to the shouts yet, and I don't plan on using them a lot, since they appear to require dragon souls. Damn.

Your settings are really quite damn high. However, at that resolution you can do yourself a favour and just turn off the Antialiasing completely, I mean hell, at HD resolution you ain't seeing no jagged pixel lines.

New lockpicking is simple actually.

You need to find the position of the lockpick, where the lock turns full 90°.

You can place the lockpick from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock positions . When you try turning the lock, and it does not go, try moving the lockpick from standard 12 o'clock position to say, 2 'clock and see if it moves farther when you try to unlock it. As soon as you see that the lock does not move, stop trying to turn it, as you have maybe 2 seconds of total "forcing" time before the pick breaks.

Closer you get to the sweetspot, more and more the lock turns, until you finally get it.

Personally, it's a bit of a step-back from Oblivion's lock picking, which was a bit more realistic. This is just copy-paste from Fallout 3 lock picking minigame.

You really should reconsider your position on dragons.... shouts are pretty cool imo.

I use the slow down time one as my last resort all the time.

If it wasn't for dungeons, I'd max out my settings for everything actually. I was really pleasantly surprised that my card handles the game so well. I was preparing myself for a letdown, and a forced upgrade... but I guess I'll stick with this card (now two years old) for another year, and hopefully jump two card generations.

I might tweak the settings for slightly better performance, but for 90% of the time the settings are already fine, it's only on occasion when there is a lot of dust in the air and while in a dungeon that I feel a slow down.

About the lock picking, I know what you mean, but for expert level locks it's a lot harder.... I guess more practice will help:p

Btw, you can toggle things like grass through command console... that might help in a lot of cases. Also you can toggle weather, which I do on occasion... gets too gloomy in skyrim sometimes.

Shouts ARE incredibly cool, I am almost level 10 now and it's almost 1 AM now (and I have classes tom... today :p ).

Don't worry about my opinion of dragons. I am getting to know what's actually going on slowly...

Grass is OK, not too dense, and draw distance is not too far.

And I bloomed from happiness when I found myself a katana :D Now my one-handed blade skill is rocketing, along with archery, and all magic. Next I'll upgrade the katana with smithing (Fine, +1 damage) and throw and enchantment for it, and I'll probably have it until the end of the game, since I don't do much swordfighting anyway, sword is just there to warn the opponents to keep distance (where I can hit them with giant ice spikes).

One can't help but to stay in awe after seeing how much attention to the detail was payed. When you have your katana at your belt, you can see the saya (scabbard), and when you pull out your sword the saya remains at your belt until you assign a new weapon as active one.

Quiver of arrows on back, sword in right hand and Flames/Sparks/Ice Spike/Fear magics in left, unstopabble.

Only wish is for bit better performance when fighting two mages who are throwing particle effects left and right in a dungeon full of dust, as you've said it.

But, for a 2 and half year old laptop it ain't all that bad, huh?

"DOVAHKIIN DOVAHKIIN
NAAL OK ZIN LOS VAHRIIN"
...

Never get tired of that theme...

I'm actually about to embark on a bit of campaigning....

Btw apparently you can edit character attributes through the console.... I'm gonna see if I can make myself 7 feet tall:p

Katanas are awesome, wish I had one in real life too:D

Ok, so SERIOUS Skyrim bug.

I was going off doing my own thing, and returning to the main quest from time to time.

In one of my goings I managed to get around the gates that you're not supposed to be able to make it through, in high hrothgar... and went up to the throat of the world.

Unfortunately now the main story line is stuck... the next quest simply does not appear:(

Already restarted the game and on a marathon run to get to the same point in the game... but basically have to redo the same thing and kill a few hours doing it:(

The only positive is I decided to play as an imperial this time, instead of a rebel.

Edit: Actually there are a ton of minor bugs that are begging for a patch IMO... for example no sprint jump:wtf:

I have found a bug where you need to talk to this guy in a dungeon somewhere, but when he talks, no sound is heard and it's over in a second, i.e. no sound files are being loaded.

When you persuade him to open the door for you, he says to wait a moment and no matter how long you wait, the door never opens, preventing you from continuing the game.

You have to download a small fixer-upper here:
Skyrim Esbern Voice/door issue workaround. - Syndicate Gamers

I so much like the game right now. I am finally home, now to just transfer my save file with level 21 Imperial battlemage over to my PC and enjoy the game in full graphics glory for two days.

@Infinitus, well it's probably your own fault, you're not supposed to go up there yet, why would you be in such a hurry right there? There's like, infinity of other places to go to until you advance the story that far.

You gotta give some slack to the developers, there's such an insanely high number of variables, things are bound to go wrong as soon as you do something you're not supposed to. They are actually doing a fairly decent job of coping with it, but you can't cover all of the infinity pathways a player might or might not take that'll explode your monitor :p
