I'm sort of jumping (back) into this thread late in the game. (Basketball with a 120,000 laser ball... what? lol)

- But, I was reading an article last night, that was linked about 15 clicks deep in a press release web of content somewhere. Long and short of it was that the CEO of the company that makes PicoP engine and ShowWX pico projectors said (in Feb 2011) that we were about a year off from seeing green diodes from Nichia, Osram, and Soraa that can be integrated into projectors.

- Another interesting note from my reading. Current PicoP engine (ShowWX) pico projectors DON'T use DPSS green, and they DON'T use direct green diodes either. They actually use a 1060nm diode and just directly double the frequency. No pumping at all, no 808nm. However, Corning, the company that made these strange greens, just shut down production of them in anticipation of coming green diodes from Soraa/Nichia/Osram.

Anyway, bottom line - we're getting lots of green diodes soon, but we may need to be patient for as much as a year. Further, count on the fact that the first place green diodes will show up is in pico projectors. That also means, expect to have to dish out $300 to $400 for them at first. (and you'll just have to hope there's a Red/Blue in there worth harvesting to lighten the wallet hit!)

- The brightness of 658nm light is ~46 lumens per watt.
- Pico projectors seem to be around 10 to 20 lumens total output (depending on which ones you look at)
- Even presuming that the idea is to make them brighter, a year from now, if they're even twice as bright, that will still just be 40 lumens.
- Generated between the 3 colours, that's really not any more than 15 lumens per light source. (citation)

Reverse the math on that...
658 mW = 1,000 / (46 / 15)
658 mW = ~320mW

So even if we're really generous about how bright we *expect* the next generation of pico projectors with green laser diodes to be, you're still looking at harvesting a red diode that is roughly a LOC's power, from that first wave of projectors that we may harvest for greens :(

Tisk tisk tisk wheres your positive thinking!

Remember that LOCs are only rated at 150mW and 445nm diodes are only run at 1000mW in the projectors but both of these are commonly driven twice as high. So if its a 320mW rated red its reasonable to think we might get 400mW if not 600mW out of it.

Also since red isnt as visible to our eye as green it probably will be a higher power diode to compensate for color mixing.

However, regarding visibility, that's already accounted for in the lumens/watt figure for 658. In fact, that's why the 658 is so high (330mW) in that calculation, relative to the (60? 80?) mW green diode we're hypothetically talking about it counterbalancing in a projector.

If a red diode is used it would most likely be a higher lm/W wavelength that is still relatively inexpensive to integrate with a decent gamut - like 640nm.

So the red diodes may not even need to be as powerful as the LOCs.

Well if that's the case, it would also be good news. If they are manufacturing more 640nm diodes, then prices would go down and we'll be seeing more of them in pointers.
 
4 watt Blue? is there a 3watt? 2watt=2000mw=300.00+ 4watt=4000mw=500.00 = great buy considering you get that much more power for only 200.00 more :takeit:

I'm not sure I follow your math?
Our 1-2W blue diodes are $50. Not $300

We don't know the price a 4watt diode would even be, so where did you find $500? I'm not sure I follow any of this....
 
What did I miss? When did these become available? How did we get pricing?
 
its my laser instinct and paypal that have purchased many lasers under 2 Watts from the price of $280 - $360 why can you build me something OVER 2 WATTS for the price of under $280? ............ Look JT just making small talk. I was mentioned maybe these diodes was pricing from $500 +. 3 builds with totalling $1000 in the last month i have disected. to try to build one unit pushing around 4000 ma. would you like pics?...... this 4 Watt laser is just what i might need so $500, a $1000 would save me a lot of time. thanks. :scared:

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about....but sure how about some pics :thinking:
