2.1W "Evil Shadow" 650nm C-Mount Diode build Handheld

This is amazing. Awesome to see such a high power 650. This is about 10x more powerful than a normal red, assuming its 200mw :p

Why should they fall in price anytime soon? There aren´t any alternatives with NEAR the current price / power around..

Well if past experience holds true, they're probably making even higher powered ones, and the price on these ones will be much better... (optimistic)

Maybe you might of missed it in the other thread but "Iam" the one supplying these diodes.:beer: Being that you know me pretty good over the years i can assure you now that the price will Never drop Or will you see great power diodes then these any time soon if ever .

Once you save up for one grab one because they are going quick.:wave:


I can tell you Jay or anyone also reading that the price these diodes are priced at is low for what they are.

Being that i know my stuff when it comes to red since its my favorite colored/WL lasers and i do alot of research looking on them I would not have offered them if they where not a good deal.:)

In short thats why i think this is going over people heads because they just dont know what these type of diodes go for.

The ones that do know have went crazy over them.:)

So i would not call the diode expensive just maybe not what someone can afford.:)

I think a wake up post on showing that these diodes are incredibly cheap to whats out there now.! I will try to do it later tonight.:beer:

Ok I'm going for it...

I'm going to use a 'stubby' D Mag with single 32650 with a 2 mode AMC7135 driver. (medium and high - 900mA/3Amp)

I'm going to use the custom head shown a couple of posts ago, but I'm going to make a custom set up specifically for this C-mount build.

If all goes as planned, I will be able to do fine focus adjustment by simply turning the custom head. :cool:
 
Well. I just purchased one of these diodes. My 50mm lens is on the way as well and I am making drawings for MrCrouse for my custom C-Mount host. Now I guess I need to research how to create an AMC based driver for these to run at 4A. And I need to pick up some of that foil!

With an AMC driver, it will be a 1 battery build?

EDIT: I'll be back later, gotta go work the streets :p

Yes, which means you will need a good quality cell...

It's a linear driver. So it will draw the same current as the output current.

I'm going a little conservative at 3 Amps, but 2+ Watts or so won't be too bad I'm thinking...

That way it will last longer too.

Anyway, at 3 Amps, the estimated run time between charges for a 6000mAh 32650 cell, is 2 hours at best. (if the cell is actually 6000mAh's capacity)

For my planned build, I should have plenty of size for the heatsink mounting it into the top of the D Mag host after cutting the switch/bulb stem out of the way.

Then my custom head (mostly for looks), will be for holding the lens. But I'm going to have threads inside the custom head so that I can just screw it onto the Mag host like normal.

So just getting the lens positioned correctly should allow for focusing by turning the custom head. :D

If all goes as planned, it will look just like this: (but not planning on using a voltage monitor because I want more room for a large heatsink)

I dont want to say too much about my planned build, but lets just say I am EXCEEDINGLY pumped about it. I originally thought I would need a dual battery setup, so this may take the price of my host down some.

Does anyone know of a good sidebutton clicky switch? I don't dont really want a tailclicky. Obviously it would need to handle a good 4A of current...although I may bump it down to 3.5 or so.

Lazeerer, do you happen to know the output diameter? I am getting measurements together for the aperture of the host

Mine is being modeled after the RPL from Optotronics. I may see about getting the outside anodized black but I am worried about the thermal implications of that. I am going for a slightly smaller cell for mine at 26650, but my 4000mAh cell should give me hour runtimes at best.

I have decided not to use indium foil. Apparently if you use slightly too thick of a layer it is worse than straight contact.

About thermal and electrical conduction from the diode mount to the heatsink, did anyone think over adding in arctic silver under the diode and then adding in a sort of "leash" from the mount to the host? The mount looks to be gold plated so it should be easy enough to solder to right? Then all you would need to do is add a second small set screw to attach the lead to the heatsink with. That way you would avoid the potential inefficiencies from the use of indium foil as well as from the arctic silver. Actually, you could use the "leash" for the indium or arctic silver setup.

That's just an idea I had.

If only I had $425 to spend I would have one of these diodes ordered tonight...

Okay I need some assistance...how do I give measurements to a machinist for the hole for the c-mount screw?

I remember how much I was shaking the first time I experimented with a C-mount diode. I was so concerned that I would damage it. Over time though I found they weren't that difficult to work with and can be somewhat forgiving, especially with the negative contact point.

Still wish I had the room for a mini-lathe;)
