2.1W "Evil Shadow" 650nm C-Mount Diode build Handheld

I'm sorry about any annoyance this may
cause, but I do plan on selling these.
Would you ask DTR for the names of his
suppliers? Would you ask Angelos what all
the chips are he uses on all his boards?
This is nothing personal. I don't know who
any of you really are. I don't make it a
habit to trust random strangers on the
Internet. Suppose I did share this info
with someone. There would be nothing
stopping them from undercutting me. This
is retail, not a group buy.

If anyone really wants one, you can have
one in your hands in about 2wks. (Well,
you probably wouldn't want to hold it in
your hands because of skin oils, but :p),
and sorry for the delays in answering any
messages. I am going as fast as I can.

I can understand that. How much do they cost? If we knew that we could save up and make an order with you.

I think the reason your approach was discouraging, is that most of us give a lot of information and resources away to this community that we could be using to make money, but we don't, we give it away freely for everyone's benefit.

I'm not anti capitalist, by any means. But when you make a practice of contributing to a community, and giving a lot away for free, it really cheeses you out to see someone come across a source for something cool, but not share it, because they want to act as a middle man and collect some markup from you.

I've had occasions where I've been unable to disclose a source of something, but it's never been because I wanted to keep that source and ask as a middle man for profit.

That's my feeling. Others may have other reasons for their distaste at your approach, but that was mine.

EDIT: PS - you mentioned asking people for the name of his ICs - I've shared dozens of driver designs, as have many others on this forum.

^ditto. Especially when you have more or less dangled it in front of everyone for weeks, like a child at recess: "hey look what I got!" It doesn't come across well. And honestly, I feel a lot better buying diodes from DTR than you, because (likewise) like you said, I dont know you and as far as seller rep goes with something as sensitive as diodes, I'm not sure what you have- and that makes slapping down 400$ that less probable. Just my thoughts, just being up front and honest.

Oh and as far as asking for DTR's sources: osram/oclaro/mits come from the manufacturers, nichia comes from...well who cares. He offers the best price on all the diodes he carries anyway, theres no need to know his sources by name. At least he provides something as simple as the datasheets...

Well, I'm very sorry if that is how it
comes across. That is certainly not the
way I intended it. I have a good record
here selling things, including laser
diodes, and you are certainly free to buy
from whomever and wherever you choose.
Sometimes a datasheet is simply not
available. That doesn't make the burn
marks on my cabinets any less real.

I've said my piece here in the thread, and it was a very honest straightforward perspective on why your approach irked me.

Don't take this to PM and suggest that crazyspaz bribed me to say what I said. That's childish, and I have no interest in arguing via PM.

If I had money I sure as heck wouldn't use it to bribe someone on the internet. I don't even know why you would think I would do that...Like i said, I was just being straightforward. I put my opinions on the table for everyone to consider. I thought that was the point of a public forum  I have no malicious or ill feelings towards you (although the PM thing...), I was just telling you what's on my mind, as I am sure I am not alone in said opinions.

Part of the reason I commented on you vs. DTR for diodes is I know how stupidly fragile the 650's were, which is why I said I was unsure of your reputation with selling diodes, and just diodes- not anything else.

Don't worry about it too much, or you will end up going mad and flipping out over everything (like a certain...cough...someone recently). And again, like I said, 400$ is a lot for a diode- if you can't provide some simple assurances (not to say you won't), you won't sell a single diode. I doubt your sales anyway as this hobby has shrunk so much, and everyone would rather buy a 'plug and burn' type module. 99% of people here certainly don't want to mess around with a tricky c-mount.

Nah, the PM was not about you. I know you
would not try to do something like that.

Really? Hmm, guess I missed that one. :pop:

rhd: I'm going to send another PM. I am
not trying to argue with you or anything.
This is more pertaining to the OP of this
thread, and not to do with the new diodes.

If I misinterpreted your PM, feel free to clarify (and if so, my apologies - but it was pretty short, and I thought pretty straight forward)

If I had to depend upon scraping up what little I could from selling things online, I'd be forced to keep sources to myself too, unfortunately. Same as DTR, I think this is all he has for making a living, selling diodes. I've often wondered if I didn't have my regular job if I could earn enough to keep afloat selling to nitch markets, not sure, but I bet DTR is doing well in his.

Dear Lazeerer, that 'evil shadow ', frightening yet beautiful .Great work. Wish I had all the equipments to work on one of the 'evil '
