I was put off to the fact other forums were discussing it, yet there was no info here. We are the biggest laser related forum on the net, yet there is no info here. Its a valid emotion.

If I could actually solder a diode I would be involved in everything here. I, unfortunately, have to rely on other peoples work. Which costs money, a commodity I have very little of.

In that case, here's a picture of a cat with a bowl on its head

TJ, such is the state of the internet. Bigger often doesn't mean better. I used to want to get into the vets section, but not anymore. If I did, I'd just ask a bunch of stupid questions and post the same things in different subfora.

btw, you can't solder a diode? I stop by computer repair shops around me and just ask 'em for broken optical drives. No harm in asking. If all I get is a lame CD reader, it still gets used for practice soldering/harvesting. Plus, free PBS cube!

The "defense" comes from your choice of verbiage. Your words sound like some esoteric "we" is "holding back" valuable info. Instead of just sharing your "discovery" you chose to accuse others of holding back, and sweeping it under the rug. There is nothing "wrong" with YOU bringing the info out. It is your choice

You didn't know about the diode. Who's fault is that? You sound a lot like the people who post the threads you listed above

I just read about something cool. How come you guys didn't tell me about it?

Not my job, mate. I miss stuff all the time and I probably spend more time online than most.

Those posts you listed above are the nature of LPF. It is an "entry point" to the world of the laser hobby. We have been getting those same kinds of threads as long as I have been here. We will ALWAYS get those threads as long as we are doing our jobs.

You want to read about a new diode? Buy one, do some research, and post something about it.

Peace,
dave

damnit, that deserves rep but i cant rep you again right now. +1 owed to you dave!

I may be a pessimist but my opinion is that we are unlikely to see 650nm diodes out of optical drives get any more powerful than the LOC's we have now. I think we're pretty much at the plateau of DVD development.. Similar to when CD burners hit 52x and for the most part stopped there. There simply isn't a need to develop them any higher for this application. If we do end up with 650nm diodes capable of significantly higher powers in optical drives, my guess would be that it was the result of better and cheaper manufacturing processes rather than an active push towards increased power.

And I also remember seeing stuff here in the past about the LPC-826's, and IIRC, the conclusion of the thread was that they were just hype and in no significant way better than the LPC-815's.

I have been holding back, for reasons mentioned by daguin, but for those who understand it's an unknown, I will soon order the sleds containing the same diode. These LPC-826 sleds will be $12 plus shipping and PP fees, so, about $17 in the USA and I also have Axixz modules if needed. Thanks folks! -Glenn

I don't know if this is ok/not to mention, but there's a sales thread on PL right now that has some 826s for just a smidgen under $10. I grabbed 4x of them and it came to just under $40. I think they have a few left.

(Is it ok to mention *other* laser forums?)

Once you test them, let us know if indeed the output is better... I for one, have been wanting any improvement that will get us a red laser near 400mW w/ the ideal lens. ;) -Glenn

I heard that saw on the German site that they peak at 300mW at 430mA or so.
Pretty much an LPC-815.

Update from the german freaks:
100mA = 20mW
200mA = 120mW
300mA = 210mW
400mA = 290mW
500mA = 330mW :freak: :mrgreen:

All this without TEC cooling.

Then after 24 hours of CW at 500mw he got brave and
pushed current up to 600mA and measured an output of 366mW after optics
The brave little diode didn't make it through the night though....

A member on another Forum did a test on one of
those LDs and this was what he posted...

I did this just for you Lasersbee
Now you can share mine. :eek:)
Tested under CW conditions
Volt.........mA.........mW
2.55........278.........151
2.60........301.........167
2.65........312.........174
2.70........327.........196
2.75........350.........209
2.80........368.........217
2.85........380.........226
2.90........413.........233
2.95........435.........248
3.00........475.........261

3.20........545.........285
3.25........578.........289
3.30........630.........296
3.35........Died, corked, went to that big Laser Beam in the sky.

This was in a large heat sink called a CHUNK and regular cheap
lens.

I think you're quite realistic here. More powerful diodes would only serve a practical purpose in faster writers. I dont think there is much market for faster dvd drives anymore - who would buy a 30x speed if it was much more expensive than a 24?

Realistically we may see some power increase with bluray, but dvd seems to be at the end of its development.

Maybe something interesting will come out of future optical storage systems like 3d or holographic discs, but we'll be waiting a long time for those (projected for 2020 or so).
