Where oh where have the driver builders gone? We seriously need boost drivers (especially small ones)

Is DrLava out of the driver building game? I still have one of his little boost drivers somewhere around here.

Oh boy, this thread is going places like never before charted here on LPF

I might have an idea regarding some unique hosts for these new diodes if they're legit. If everything goes to plan I'll post a thread (sometime) soon.

I think this diode would go great in the mini version of the hosts you make.., any small host really.

Indeed, that design would go nicely with the smaller host. More to come if I'm able to get used to working with such small components ;)

I just bought a nice mech mod in anticipation of buying one of DTR's heatsink/510 adapters but he ran out as soon as I bought it :cryyy:

I would love to have this color laser in this baby especially because these mods are much smaller that I originally figured. It would make a great little pocket laser. Just gotta find some sort of adapter for the heatsinks :D

He is out of stock on the microboost driver. If anyone has any input on boost drivers I would sure like to know about it. The demand is there. There are a lot of situations where you just cannot fit 2 batteries in a small build. I see it as one of the reasons why pen builds have dried up. Another reason is builds kind of go in cycles and once too many are shown some interest drops. I have a bunch of different pens to build with still but no leadlight/laser66.

What about the innolasers FlexDrive? It looks like it has an inductor for boosting, but I can't quite tell by the product description. I've got two microboost drivers left though.

Edit: Could we GB those if they are boost drives? The savings could be pretty significant with a volume purchase.

If you're lucky, it's possible to come across some 3.7v 14250s (1/2 AA) on eBay. While a bit pricey, they're the perfect battery profile for pens if you can't find yourself a boost driver. Not sure how much of a beating they can take though, probably under ~3W if I were to guess.

As far as I remember, the flex is a buck/boost. It will run a 405/445 diode on a single lithium battery, just not sure of the current limits. I seem to remember that it was around 1.5A

Re: Holy @#$%... $120 488nm diode!!

Looks like drivers are gonna be an issue if these pan out...

I just saw that these are case negative, just like my 476nm diode. :O This means we can't use microboost drives for any host that acts as part of the electrical connection (like the leadlight). The flexdrive is common negative so that's what I had to use for my 476nm builds. That being said, the forward voltage of these guys looks to be a bit higher than my 476nm diodes(6V vs 5.5V nominal), and the flexdrive is only rated to go to 5.5V, so the flexdrives may not be able to drive these guys properly.

Electronic wizards of this forum...please provide us with some compact boost drivers!!

On a somewhat related note, I haven't been able to find my 476nm pointer in a few months, and I looked all over for it. I'm currently packing up a bunch of stuff, and decided to go through my drawer of unmarked diodes and test which ones were working or not. I found a couple good SM 520nm/445nm diodes and some 445nm diodes along with some dead ones. Then I grabbed for another, put it on my variable PSU, and bam, sky blue photons across my desk. :O :O I must have ripped the pointer apart and forgot about it!!! I soldered a microboost to it for ESD protection and ran it for a bit and it looks fine. I would have been devastated if I had killed my baby...

I believe in UFO's but I don't believe in a cheap 488nm 50mw laser diode (yet), but I want to believe. Styro, glad you found your 476nm diode! I think you deserve a lot more reps than you have, just that you haven't been active much so no one sees posts to rep you. I will the next time I can, gave out too many in 24 hours so system won't let me yet.
