Sweet laser. That has got some power! I never keep any hand held lasers on for more than a minute straight. Regardless of the laser. (unless I am testing to see how long it can stay on before the heat starts to mess it up) It just isn't good habit. I think now that you have got that testing out of the way it should operate fine under Normal Use.

Wait, dude: Have you checked if the TEC is working? Maybe that's it!

Thanks for all the comments guys! Appreciate them!

I've not checked, I never thought it had one. I'll need to check that. It would certainly explain it. I HOPE that it's the TEC that's away since I had high expectations for this laser. That or WL have designed it so the TEC only cools the diode ;).

It may be possible that at <80% battery capacity, the TEC and Diode cannot be supplied with enough power to be run simultaneously. Try testing with FRESH batteries.

It's exciting to have a ClassIV green, though, isn't it? :D

I have tested it with fresh batteries. It's still the same problem. Maybe the TEC is dead. I will contact steve in the morning about it. Although my findngs are the same as what is shown on the power graph FROM WL.

Cheers!

Adam

Great review, It looks alike a beast and preforms like one, well for the first 160 seconds.

Once again Fantastic review!

Yeah it kinda sucks that your laser fluctuates so much - have you seen the video for the power test of my Spyder I? That thing is solid in both operating mode and power output - I ended the video at 3 minutes cause I got bored :p

Nice review Adam... it's a shame that the laser drops power so fast...
Like you said... get in touch with Steve to see if he has any ideas or
what can be done..

@ MarioMaster... yeah my Spyder I is also rock solid and I ran a
Graph for over 5 minutes and it never when under it's rated 200mW..

Good thorough review.

Bit disappointing by all accounts.

By the way. You mentioned, "Mode Switches". Where can I get a, "Mode Switch", for my O-like module? Sounds like something I should have! :D

:)

The variation and mod hopping isn't that suprising from WL. And that price is maybe to high...

This review and the replys bring up an interesting question. What do we expect from a pointer or portable? These small units have limited battery power and heat radiation area and therefore have limited run time simply because of these design limitations.
When you turn on a high powered handheld, how long does it take to do what you want to show? Are you going to hold it on for 5 minutes? Why? I can impress an "unenlightened" person in a few seconds.
If I need power like that for extended time, I realistically consider a line powered labbie with massive heatsinking and unlimited power input. Honestly, when I show off a laser, I want power NOW but for only a few seconds. What are you guys doing with long duty cycles on hand held lasers?

HMike

By the way -- GREAT REVIEW -- Nice pictures too.

I agree with Hemlock_Mike, I was going to say something, but didn't want to appear rude. He worded it better.

Great Review! Although it only lasts at >700mW for a minute, that must just be a spectacle in itself. That could make a mean laser level lol.

I believe if you read RA_pierce's and Ohada's reviews of the PGL III 400 + PGL III 500 mW green portable lasers they too are similar in high output short duration. If you want labby preformance get a lab laser, if you want a portable that is closer, see me, (or Justin), about a Hercules. Nothing else is really designed to sustain a output of >275 mW for a few minutes.

btw, Buildabluelaser, have you priced a Herc? -Glenn
