I think I will try some steel balls like BB's.  I've read on a plating forum of someone who had had success polishing aluminum with 3 different steps.  
1. Plastic Cones
2. Stainless balls
3. Wallnut shells
Obviously I'm not going to experiment on everyone's barrels before I get this figured out right. I will be testing this out on one barrel and if there is no adverse affect, I will move to doing this with everyones barrels. I know that there was concerns of me messing up threads on the barrels with this process, but when it comes to keeping threads intact, I will be threading a bolt into the threads to keep the integrity of the threads.
