I think I will try some steel balls like BB's. I've read on a plating forum of someone who had had success polishing aluminum with 3 different steps.

1. Plastic Cones
2. Stainless balls
3. Wallnut shells

Obviously I'm not going to experiment on everyone's barrels before I get this figured out right. I will be testing this out on one barrel and if there is no adverse affect, I will move to doing this with everyones barrels. I know that there was concerns of me messing up threads on the barrels with this process, but when it comes to keeping threads intact, I will be threading a bolt into the threads to keep the integrity of the threads.
 





The steel balls might dimple the Aluminum depending on weight and size, but the airgun BB's are softer and most are copper coated. If you had any access to the ceramic ones that would be the ticket as they're supposed to work magic. You know as a last resort playground sand might also give things a fine polish; mayhap a bitch to clean up from the barrels as well.

no BBs should work.... a similar method is used after casting to get a polish
 
^ Ok sounds good then. I was just concerned as I've had people call 1/2" Steel balls BB's.

Not saying Ken was and truth be told He did say like BB's so that should be small.
 
iirc we used to use a cone shaped rock like thing first then BBs..... cant remember breen a while.
 
I don't know if this was addressed earlier, so apologies in advance if this was confirmed or assumed...

But is ken going to be installing tail clicky switches in the krytons, or is that something we will have to do?

Also ken, if you are reading this, I have noticed more traffic of you on the forums in recent times...so do you have internet access now from your residence other than your cell phone?

Unless Kenom has changed his MO, each of us will be doing the assembly of the lasers ourselves. It is not difficult

Yes. They come with all the bits n bobs needed to make a laser host.

You will still need the diode, the driver, the battery, the charger, and (if you are going with a high powered diode) a glass lens, as well as the tools and material to complete a laser (solder, diode press, etc.)

LOL! Yeah. If you paid for a diode to be pressed, I'm sure it will be included. The focus ring is NOT a lens. Did Kenom offer a choice of lenses that I didn't notice?

I've looked at multiple different options for media, but they really aren't cost effective since they sell them in 50lb+ bags. I don't need that much so it just seems to be a waste. I'm looking for options that are cheaper, since this will be the only thing I'll be using this for and then selling the polisher when I'm done with it.

How about mixing in some BB's WITH the walnut shells?
 
That might be a worth while idea to try! Not sure if this would effect it or not, but some liquid aluminum polish could be a positive addition into the mix. If I still lived in Gillette I would drive up and give you a hand.
 
OOooooh, that's a good idea. Add 2 tablespoons of Mothers aluminum Polish in the mix.

It is indeed too bad that your no longer in Gillette, I would love the assistance, plus it would be entertaining to have someone as interested in lasers as I am to gab with in person.

On another note, I've found a shop that will allow me to setup my anodizing baths that will still allow me to ventilate the area. I do NOT want to be breathing Sulfur dioxide gas (which is put off by anodizing) so the suggestions of doing the anodizing in a spare room or something like that isn't an option. However this used to be a Small engine repair business and there is plenty of room inside. this was essentially someone's garage that was converted into a business.

I also wanted to comment on my return to active status on the forum. I am sure that folks have noticed that I have had a larger presence on the forum recently and that is due completely to my ability to now tether my cellphone to my computer and access the internet from the "Modem" connection this creates. Now this is only TEMPORARY. My cellular provider has been sold to AT&T. I currently do NOT pay for a data plan. I have been able to access internet service off my Treo for several years for free and now that they are giving us all new free phones and moving us over to AT&T, I seriously doubt I will continue to get away with free internet service on my phone.
