Single Mode Blue Pen Laser Build! Osram PL450B in Leadlight Host **Video Added!!*

Just finished up building my single mode blue pen laser!

For parts I'm using an Osram PL450B laser diode in copper module, a Microboost Drive, and a Leadlight pen host. My first green laser was a Leadlight so this brings back good memories of starting the laser hobby!

The camera picks up the color as more violet than it really is. The color of this laser is much closer to true blue.

I'm a big fan of small builds, even at the cost of battery life and duty cycle. The real pro of this laser is the nice single mode beam! I'd chose one of these over a multimode 1W 445nm laser any day.

Here it is compared to a 520nm laser build using the Osram PL520. These colors go very well together. Now I only need a 635nm single mode build to complete the trio! I have already bought an Opnext 638nm laser diode from DTR, now I just need to decide on a host/driver combo.

So it's no "lightsaber", but it is one of my favorite builds!

I like my single mode 450nm blue too, more eye friendly when playing indoors. what battery did you use?

I built mine in a lilly chrome pen host and used two 10440 cells in parallel and it's giving decent output. :evil:

I'm using two AAA alkalines. Not my choice of battery, but it does the job!

I used AAA's before but runtime is pitiful and changing AAA's before they were completely empty is a waste so I went with 10440's. Output became more stable and a bit of power increase too.

Thinking of getting DTR's RGB combo amd making my own RGB pen set. Sure, you can get a cheap set off ePay but it's not as much fun, plus it's a 520 green!

Styro..it seems you're going the same route than veterans and myself are heading towards..the really elegant single modes.

I just ordered another couple of Krytons to make single-mode builds out of...I have my 405nm, and the PL450 is my next buy. My 650nm that's in my MXDL is going in the other Kryton. The only one I wont have is the PL520...I don't need another one at that price when I have my SSW.

Yeah I'm a big fan of the single mode builds. To be honest I don't really care for the class IV handheld lasers cuz they are so dangerous. I'm looking forward to building a single mode 638nm handheld to complete the trio!

yeah that's why I bought 7 grooves but just haven't had any free time for building lasers as of recently! but I did just get a hot air reflow/solder station which I would be nice to use soon.

Nice! The PL450b is a pretty cool diode. The beam is sweet.
Except mine zombied after 20 minutes.
I wish these single modes were available with a little more power... 250mW would be nice.
