Single Mode Blue Pen Laser Build! Osram PL450B in Leadlight Host **Video Added!!*

Hey styro, do you think you could provide some links to where you bought your parts? I am new to the laser scene, though you are the one who inspired me to love laser! :P

You should buy your parts from an LPF member. You can find vendors in THIS thread.

Jayrob can sell you the host that styro used.
DTR can sell you the diode+driver.

Hey I saw in his video that he had a switch board. Where would I go about getting one of these? Or if I could make it, how would I?

The pens from Jayrob include the switch board and everything you need.

I've built a few of these now, they are NOT by any means beginner builds. Pens are not fun to build right off the bat.

Now, I love to build one, but a couple years ago? Let'd just say it was one dusty pen when I built into it ;)

If you REALLY want to tackle this, I recommend looking around at the build threads, I can also help with any questions. PM me if you run into a hurdle when building this, or need info :)

Yeah if you have issues I would love to be of assistance as well. I have now made about 5 of these and I have done both fixed focus and variable focus. When I first started I would be out working for a couple of hours. My most recent pen build was completed within 30 minutes.

Very very nice! Love it! You might say I'm a BIG fan of these kind of builds.
For more "interesting" build ideas, check out my "Share your inexpensive builds thread".
Gotta say it again, those are just beautiful! +REP

Hey i'm having a bit of trouble. The module doesn't seem to be fitting right. It just slides right in. Also how exactly do I do the case negative set up? What do I have to do to make it case negative?

And sorry if these questions are really noobish. I am very knew to lasers.

How I do case negative builds is a little tricky, but it's worked twice now :p

Take a wire from the neg Vin on the driver, and run it to the side of the module, and jam it between the module and the case of the pen. That should also be more than enough to keep it in the pen. If now, a little bit of sticky residue, or epoxy will do the trick ;)

As far as getting connectivity on the endcap of the pen. I do the following.

Hold a bit of solder globbed on the cap (inside) and hold the iron on there for a while until it heats enough to stick on. Then let it cool, should have a nub of solder to meet with the neg of the batteries.

Post anymore questions you may have :)

Would I just be able to use some super glue for the wire and module? Or would epoxy work better?

Don't use glue, the fumes can damage the lens. Also, if you used epoxy on the wire, it won't conduct. Just have a raw contact with a stripped portion of the wire.

I saw Carbondale and thought you lived in Colorado for a split second. We have a Carbondale here too.

The beams in your vids always look so good. you use fog though right? in this particular one, to me it looks to be the same color as either of my 445nm. In person, is there a noticeable color difference?

I'm considering having Blord make me some osram builds, 450 and 520, and had been before I saw this, funny. Bigger hosts though. I know there's builders in the U.S., but Blord has my loyalty already, nothing against the others. I asked him about the 638nm single modes too. a set of three including all these would indeed be sweet

I'm already building another member an RGB pen set. I can do 2 if you want :)

Black pen - 638nm
Silver pen - 450nm
Gold pen - 520nm

I don't like pen hosts particularly, I prefer duty cycle and bigger batteries to size for the most part. thanks though;)

plus Blord has gone above and beyond for me. I recommend him to everyone (though I mention he's in belgium, and lasers from him must go through customs) He'll get all my business until there's something he can't provide or he stops doing it.

Well I figured since you mentioned this thread, about pens :p

Well all right then, enjoy his service, he really is spectacular :)

fair enough. though pen host was not what drew my interest. mostly the single mode thing and 520nm together caught my attention, as well as the mention of single mode 638nm.

I'd like to see a beam shot comparison of the 638nm single mode and multi mode together. I tried using a 3 element lens from my 660nm instead of a g2 on my 638 multi mode, it doesn't help much, so I put the g2 back on. I guess it makes a little difference in the first couple meters, but not much after that.

dammit, derailing threads again, my bad. I'm done. I finally +REPed styropyro, long overdue
