PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please

I would like it even better at $100.00. It's too bad that it is so difficult to determine which diodes are the real NDG7475s on eBay before you buy them. I suppose I should look out for the next auction on these diodes. :thanks:

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please

The 7475s I bought from DTR is putting out over well over a watt on the 22mm module I bought a few years back.

crazy bright, solid diode, but I paid a pretty penny for it. If I remember right, it was pushing $300.00 for the completed module. - back when I had money

Nice diode but still pricey.

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please

The diode alone is $165.00 from DTR, IIRC. Not as much as they were when they first came out, but still pricey. Add a large module and driver with a lens and you are talking well over $200.00.

For tapping aluminum or copper I found a ratcheting tap to be much easier to use than a simple T. Here's a listing on ebay with taps, and cheap too:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/T-Handle-R...M3-M8-5Pcs-Screw-Thread-Plug-Tap/283067027398

Edit: On second thought, this might not be the tool I found here in Qatar, maybe a knock off, the price is far too cheap. The one I bought looks just like it but made by Suki, Ace Hardware carries them here but do not include taps. I assumed they were the same tool, but the Chinese are experts of duplicating things and selling them cheaper, unfortunately, they don't duplicate quality.

I like that tap set very much. Do you need to drill a guide hole before using this tap? I have a feeling I would get some use out of this. Just need to know how difficult it is to use. :thanks:

That was a stupid question. Of course you need to drill a hole first. I don't have a drill press. That could make this more difficult to use.

I need a center punch to get it right, other than that, yea, drill an undersized hole for the tap, there is a list you can find on line somewhere showing what size drill bit to use for a specific tap, but I just eyed it, selected one smaller, but not too small... the Goldilocks method.

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please

A big part of tapping threads is going slow and backing out often to clear your threads, if your tap starts to bind don't force it, work it back and forth without putting any lateral force on your tap, that ratchet could put lateral pressure on the tap, so if you use it I would choke up on it, that is grip it at the head and not at the end of the handle, also a drop of cutting oil helps your cuttings out the flutes.

I had been breaking 6/32 taps ( PITA ) getting a broken tap out, then BowtieGuy sent me some taps that work well, they also cost 14 dollars a tap.

So don't expect much from cheap tools, breaking a tap off is not worth going a little faster, I suggest taking your time, especially if using " value " tools. :)

The ratchet worked fine for me, I was able to work it back and forth without necessarily needing to flip the switch, simply by holding the chuck with two fingers when reversing, a must for copper which is far more difficult to tap. I've broken taps off in iron before, horrible! Who makes the good taps you received?

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please

If you are drilling your holes oversize you will be able to tap easier but your threads won't be as deep, I pretty much use the recommended drill size, yea copper is grabby, I use a slower RPM for drilling copper than steel or aluminum.

That ratcheting T handle really isn't so long as I was thinking, I only glanced at it the 1st time, it's also an auction but still a " value " tool, believe me I like a bargain but cheap tool are not really a bargain in the long run.

New thread page, went back to get the text:

I've been tapping for so many years, I stopped using the list on which drill size to use with which tap. I haven't checked, but I bet it is the right size for that tap.

The price of that tool is deceiving for how nice it is, unless the one I found on ebay is a knock-off of mine, I hope not, didn't consider that when posting and edited the post with that note. The one I bought was found at Ace Hardware here in Qatar. I wouldn't pass the word how much I like that tool if I hadn't been using tap tools for 30+ years now :)

Like you said, go slow and to back it out quite often, especially when you don't know how strong the taps are. I bought my taps here, they were not part of the offering, so maybe that one on ebay is a knock off and the cheap taps to be avoided. Thanks for the link to that tap, I'm going to get some. The taps I used were not cheap, but cheaper than that high quality one.

Edit:

Here's the one I bought

Anyone know what size of tap DTR uses for his modules? I want to get a tap slightly larger than what he uses to make more slop for the lens when using a set screw, if that is possible without becoming too large.

That He-Cd has been sitting in that box for who knows how many years? The shipping to me from CA is almost as much as the laser. That is well over $300 in total. Would love to have a low hour working one in good shape, but might as well wish for a unicorn.

Yeah, could be high pressure from sitting so long. But at the same time, that's still a fantastic deal for a brand new HeCd in box.

If it still works, you bet. I'd love to get a brand new HeCd for $350 total, but the chances are too great that I will have a $350 ornament to put over my bench as a reminder of not what to waste $$ on. Also, I think it is just the tube, so would need a PS.
