Check out this vintage home-made "Steampunk" HeNe laser for about $90 shipped.

Not bad if someone wants a complete system that looks nice.

They do look a little interesting, but they are flat package, which is not something easy to deal with for most hobbyists (due to lack of flat package modules for use with flashlight-style laser hosts)

About time to resurrect this thread. MI-Lasers has over 60 new 2mW HeNe 543.5nm Green laser tubes for sale on eBay for the good ol' price of $200 each:

If that's true it's definitely worth a shot, especially since there are so many of them. Plus the PSU will add a bit to the cost of the system.

Meredith Instruments is selling these for $195, but I bought one from them for just $95! That's because when they had first relisted the tubes at the end of June this year, they were (perhaps by mistake) selling them for $95 but they quickly changed it back to $195 after a while. :shhh:

But the 473 are dpss lasers using harmonic generations and frequency mixing, there are no optically allowed transitions between energy states of Neon atom that results in 473 nm.... :rolleyes:

Hey Jeff
You can get a multi line Argon at 488nm with other lines. A friend of mine had a He-cad? it was multimode spot deep purple. But a simple HeNe type would be awesome.

The Xe laser also lases at 488 nm, just like Ar-ion. Besides the purple line, He–Cd has a blue/indigo line too at 442 nm, a lot like these new blue diodes. He–Ne can't lase blue if you look at the energy diagram of Neon atom.

Just placed my order, they accepted an offer of $100. My first gas laser, I'm really excited, now I just need to learn more about them, find a deal on a power supply, and find a stand...

they will take $95 - i have two and they are brand new with +2mW outputs. enjoy the beauty of awesome beam specs done with just smoke and mirrors.
you're gonna want a ps that does about 2.75kV at 6.5mA

wow! that would fire up a long red tube. i think it's a bit much for these greens.
these are Great tubes. melles griot's next to most powerful greene. and New old stock - they will happily lase for years and years. and naked as can be - acres of exposed plasma glow!

The reason I ask is because that's the PSU Dave sent me for my current green tube. It's probably a very similar tube inside.
