My first gas portable - the "PortaHeNe"

I honestly googled acrylic box and that was the first one

I'm sure you could find a bigger size. That would be a really sweet display case

If you can cut accurately and you need speciffic dimensions, you can construct your own box. There is special acrylic glue they use on fish tanks that has the same index of refraction as the acrylic, so you don't see any seams. The glue is pretty common I have bought it from a local hardware.

i found a little uniphase tube on the bay for $25. it's a red multimode. here's some pix

Awesome build. This thread gives me an idea and when I get ideas my wallet goes into hiding.

Multimode? That's probably not multiple transversal modes but longitudinal modes, as far as I know only large HeNe's are multiple transverse mode but I could be wrong.

that has been my (very limited) experience too. i do have a MG 12mw he ne tube that is listed in sam's as multimode. this new tube's spot is just the same - looks like an arrangement of small "spots".

no model # on the tube or other info - just a bar code plus numbers. and "made in u.s.a." with 917444 under it.
i bought it not knowing a thing about it other than it was listed as working and a 30 day return.

ok, I have to admit, I find that little HeNe strangely sexy :>

BTW, Office supply stores also often have clear boxes to build in.... they use them for holding paper and pens and such. You can even get ones with a smoked glass look if you want. Another possible place are hobby and craft stores, often used for displaying model cars and other projects.

Okay first of all RHD this is a beauty and that beam is incredible!
+ 1 to you sir!

Secondly I want the animal in the post above me! :san:
