That little bastard sent my LaserShades promptly and in safe packaging. I think it's safe to say that I'm NEVER not doing business with him again.

Time for me to put in MY 2 cents :-?, only in the literal NOT sarcastic sense :)Greg seems to have taken me under his wing, so to speak, & helps me out every chance he can with the wealth of knowledge that he has in his hatrack ;)We started off on a bad footing & I'm not going to go into that, but I was fortunate enough to talk to him via land-line, & found out we have so much in common, we coulda been brothers  I'm proud to number Greg as one of my best friends & I can only hope that he feels the same way about me. The world would certainly be a lesser place without people like Greg Stoner :'( rob/phoenix77

I will have to say, he has always delivered exactly what I ordered, and shipped it out quickly, what kind of imagination does that take???? None! ;D There is only one way to do it right, this is the easy-way that Greg chooses, when there is a "world" of options to do it wrong that he simply will not explore, like I said no imagination, "vanilla-business". My advice to all is to PayPal a couple of C-notes to someone random on Ebay that promises the world, then you will have some stories you can tell your grandkids, just don't count on what you paid for!

I've not dealt with him before but I will say that he quickly offered to send me a fan when I had that issue with my argon laser not long ago....

Sorry, I'm all for extolling the virtues of greg.  We've all dealt with him a number of times and have seen the good and the bad.  But do we really need to lift him up on a pedestal?  What kind of expectations do we hold him to and what kind of a let down it is when he might not be able to fulfill our expectations???  There are other members of this forum who go to great lengths to do lots of good stuff for this hobby and for this forum but you dont' see stupid threads about how hard they work do you?  I am not posting this because I'm jealous or wanting some recognition myself.  I just know what it's like to do what you feel is right and then be held up for everyone to idolize and the instant you fail to uphold some mysterious ideal, your shit on, and ostrasized because you made a mistake.  Or if it's not to your face, your backstabbed constantly and wonder why nobody talks to you anymore.  This is kind of one of the reasons I see greg kind of removing his reputation.  Who would want to be god?  Who would want to be looked at as the biggest contributor and all around best guy on the forums.  Those are some pretty big shoes to fill.

Ok maybe it is a little personal.  We all like to hear how we are doing a good job.  We all want to know that the sacrifices and contributions are appreciated.  Lets spread the love around man.  Not idolize just one person.  there are others out there that deserve it too.
/lecture.

*edit* I've read this multiple times and always come away with the wrong impression.  I am NOT putting greg down in any way shape or form.  My main point is that Greg is a normal guy.  Just like you an me.  He's fallible and makes mistakes.  He isn't some uber laser god, that requires worship or raising up.  His feedback and reputation reflected how much he was liked and it doesn't take 10 threads extolling his virtues to get the point across.  At that point it becomes overkill.  Maybe that explains it a bit better.

It's NOT a jealousy thing. I really don't mind that. I get my praise from the work I've done on my barrels and all the happy people.

Ken, I guess I am to blame for that and I guess the subsequent "irony" thread.

I only posted it in response to a thread called "Senkat Drama" which has now vanished (?) I did not for a minute intend the thread to sit someone on a pedestal or to differentiate any individual to say they are any better or special than anyone else. Before this hobby really exploded into the mainstream as it has, there used to be an "old skool" of enthusiasts who used to talk on Skype and discuss our latest projects (you and Greg included).

So when I saw a friend getting something he did not deserve on a public forum, I retaliated in the best way I knew how to. (Irony).

I am sorry if I have offended anyone , but I will always stick up for my friends.

Oh I agree. I've stuck up for him on a number of occasions. Certainly didn't want to make it seem a ragging post. that wasn't the intention either. I miss the Skype days. Seems everyone has gotten all commercialistic and gone the way of hordin secrets.

I hear such wonderful news about greg from stonetek but has anyone else received defective product from the guy? I ordered 2 - 16x sony diodes and 2 fully assembled diode drivers and after following his directions on building my own laser, nothing worked. I got no power going through the drivers. I called a friend of mine over who builds lasers in h opes he may let me know what I am doing wrong. I did everything correctly. Then my friend tested out the LD's and neither of them worked. I spent almost 100 bucks and got crappy defective products. I emailed greg and this is day 2 and he has not replied back to me. Right now I am very upset and leary on trusting any of the suppliers on this site.

Just a thought or two. Were the LD's defective in any visual way ? Did you take precautions from ESD failure ?

I made total precautions on everything. On his website It has directions on building the laser. I followed the steps and I got nothing. I hate to tarnish anyones reputation but not hearing back from him for 2 days now kinda has me wondering what is really going on. As for the diodes themselves they were packaged in tin foil which seemed odd to me. As for the driver boards they looked brand new. That is why I thought maybe I did something wrong. So I called my friend up to come over take a look and he even said that the products were defective.

Imntdedyt,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune(s). The good news is: as bad as you feel now, this is nothing compared to how good you will feel when you complete your first successfull-build, it's fantastic! ;D
It seams very unusual to me that you would receive all four products "defective" from Greg or anyone else, possible but not statistically probable. I have done a lot of business with Greg and everything has always been just as described and in full working order. This is a small community and it would not take long for word to get around if there were bad products being sold. This would be a supplier going out of business quick. I am certainly not disputing your suggestions of defective-products, (how the hell would I know right?), but some critical-thinking should be applied.
As far as not responding to you, it is very likely that Greg has some personal-issues preventing him from a quick response to you today, but I am sure he will get back to you as soon as is possible.
In the mean-time, there are others here on the forum that may be able to help shine some light on things for you.

How were the diodes determined to be malfunctioning, if the drivers also did not work, how did you test them?

What kind of drivers were they? what current were they set to? It might be a simple-fix. I once fought a build much too far into the night to realize my problem was a dead-battery. I figured it out in the first couple of minute in the morning.

Hang in there, these lasers are delicate and complicated things, but way worth the trouble, (sorta sounds like women).

Well you are new here... and you're first thread is a complaint...
You will have a problem with members helping someone that starts out that way...

If you would have read the Threads and Posts.... or even just this Thread...

you would figure out for yourself... that Greg is a respected and trusted member
of LPF... :-?

Back to your problem.... As was said in the previous post..

1) was the package damaged in transit???
2) was there any damage on the LDs when you received them???
3) were you ESD protected???
4) did you test your Driver with a dummy load???
5) what Driver were you using???
6) what voltage did you introduce to the LD and at what current???
7) what experience do you have with Laser Diodes and Drivers???

That should be enough to start with.... :)

BTW welcome to the forum...

Wow!  You pull up a months old thread to do this in?

To get two "defective" diodes AND two "defective" drivers in the same order, and it be the entire order,  IMO is statistically highly improbable.  We can help, but we need to know more than "My friend who builds lasers tested them and said they were bad."  Answer Steve's, DarkHorse's, and Laserbee's questions and we may get you up and running (or at least know "why" they are "defective")

Peace,
dave
