Merged 445nm Pictures and Video Thread

Re: Photos and Video of 445nm

Glutton, I didn't see the laser, I just couldn't get past the BudLight can!

My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

Well, I'm glad this worked out. Today I got the 18650 host+heatsink+Microboost driver, 405-G1 lens from Jayrob, and the 445nm diode from ElectroFreak.

Shaking hands and nervousness on my first build but, lessons learned:

1) The microboost was supposed to be adjusted to 450mA, and it was. But I checked first, with a multimeter, to make sure it was in the neighborhood since I've seen people lose diodes due to it 'changing in shipping'.

2) Getting the diode into Jayrob's copper "Press Fit" heatsink. Here's a tip: Use a key. Like the normal key to your door or something. Align the diode into the press-fit heatsink, and place the key over the leads of the diode (so that they're sticking through the hole in the key). This gives you greater surface area to use a screwdriver and something heavy to "tap" the diode into the heatsink without damaging the diode.

Anyways, here's a shot right before 'closing her up"

I added some heatshrink tubing near the diode legs to prevent a short. A short at 450mA would likely not be fun.

After assembly, with fully charged 18650 in - Looks nice; but what'll happen when I...

first-on.jpg

Oh my god it worked. I suddenly have a 445nm laser.

lit-beamshot.jpg

Here's an image of the beam in a fully lit room, coming off of my desk. No smoke in the air,a nd I even run a HEPA filter.

darkened-beamshot.jpg

Here's the beam with the lights out, again, no smoke.

colorcompare.jpg

Though the 405nm beam isn't too visible in this picture - you can see the color difference from the 150mW O-Like New Style next to the 445nm Build. Haven't metered it yet since I don't have a "local" LPM, but, even at 450mA i'd say it's doing better than 300mW. We'll see.

blu-bros.jpg

Another color comparison including 473, where I'm trying to get the differences to show up better. 473 is really so much more 'turquoise' than 445. 445 is not violet.

beamspot.jpg

The beam spot, on the wall. Sort of a 'line', but not all that bad really compared to most multimode diodes I've seen. Again the spot *really is blue*, but the overload really did make it look a bit violet. This is not how it appears to the eye.

tree.jpg

And, here's a beamshot, outdoor, daylight, on a tree trunk about 50 ft away.

This is not a low visibility laser. By any means. And it is BLUE. Anyone who's worried that it's too purple -don't. It's blue. Very deep and pure blue.

Anyways, I feel pretty good that I succesfully completed my first build, too. Now, how to fit it into my signature. :P

Congratulations!

Looks nice! I can't wait for my 445nm parts to get here and I can build mine!

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

One thing I do need to say - They're right about the "blue light" being pretty "serious" .. This thing, even when viewing the spot at a distance, leaves trails in your vision like nothing I've seen before.

I'm not pushing this into Class 4 territory, even; I'm "only" running it at a "weak" 450mW. I can't imagine how intense the 1w builds are going to be.

GJ on your 1st build
looks sweet
:bday:

Nice pictures and a nice build overall.

I think a small vice should be used to press the diode, instead of tapping it into the diode pocket though.

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

Probably true; less chance of impact/shock damage that way. Not something I had on hand though; if you've got any examples could you share those? Or links to a small vice like that?

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

I purchased a small desktop sized vice for 18.00 at my local hardware store.

Use the backend of the aixiz if you dont have another tool to push against the casing to press it into the diode pocket. I use flaminPyro's diode press tool , which works perfect by the way.

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

I got the same stuff being sent to me, basically the same kit...But Jay has to get more so he said after a week I'll have it. And yes, The things are true blue.

My setup..like-like unit with acrylic lens...10ft is like 1cm long line...But my camera shows it very blue :D

Nice build though, Hope mine comes out good too!

jbtm: lasers and Teslas... two of my favorite things

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

Aryntha, you always have the best pictures. Combine that with this awesome build, and that's a definite WIN!!!

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

Good job... :gj:

Especially for your first build... Now your hooked! :)

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

Awesome first build.
Those comparison shots are very helpful as well!

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

Thanks guys, feels good to be that much more part of the whole scene; Definitely opens up a lot for me, and really I think it's something everyone on LPF should at least try to do. When green diodes show up, I'll be ready to jump on that :) Probably going to look at a 12x 405 for the next go-around.

I really wish the camera showed the differences between 473, 445 and 405 better. They really are night and day.

Re: My first build (Jayrob 18650 Host) - 445nm Success

What power do you think it is? Very nice work for your first build. Congrats!
