Max output for a 635 nm laser, while affordable?






How can a laser not look like a laser?

Very easy. Look at a multi mode 635 at 15 meters. You have these stripes with gaps between them. And everything is square. Besides the laser speckle we all know, the beam could pass for a high power "collimated" LED.

I'm not knocking high power 635. I'm sure good quality ones are available. But the $700 types are useless. I just hate for a LPF user to buy one thinking they buying an awesome red laser. I made the mistake. They are HORRIBLE!! Only if you intend to use it within 3 meters are they acceptable.

At any rate, you said to show you an affordable high power single mode 635. At the price of 3x 445s, it's perhaps not ultra "affordable", but it's probably on par with the price many here were paying for early 12x 405nm diodes a year or so ago?

$380 for 170mW. Ok. If you think thats a good price I won't argue.
I may be power hungry and enjoy lasers with higher power output ie: mw to $ ratio, but I know some guys enjoy centain wavelengths like to 473 blue with is also highly priced (the tech in the laser is much more sophisicated than a red diode so it's kinda understandable)

If they were priced at around $50 I'd be the first to buy two and merge them :)
 
Right - I didn't buy from that site you pulled up though. I paid much less than that price.

I paid less than most people pay for a built 445nm laser pointer, and I'll have a final product built for about the same total. (Won't be nearly as amazing as a 300mW would have been though)

However, 170mW of 635 is equivalent in perceived brightness to more than 2 LOC reds. Single mode, affordable (at least for anyone who would consider a $200 445 affordable) - seems like a good thing to me. Time will tell.
 
it seems like people are always trying to compare apples to oranges with the 635 and the 660s.

Why is that apples to oranges?

They're similar but not identical wavelengths, both are available from diode lasers, and both come at powers reasonable visible, and yet within the reach of hobbyists.

I think it's a bit more like comparing Mandarins and Tangerines ;)
 
i think people want the best of both worlds. this is a laser community. get both lol....

i guess that is a better way to put it hee-hee
 
Johnyz - I think it's about the only affordable single mode 635 diode right now that can achieve that level of power. It should look like 2 or 2.5 times the beam intensity of a 660nm running at ~300. So it's still probably not going to be a completely visible beam like a green or a blue (depending on environment of course), but it's getting closer.

Two things I don't know:

1) Whether 170mw is the true max, or the "max" the same way 1000mA is the Nichia 445nm diode's "max". If this diode can be pushed to 240 mW, we've go the equivalent brightness of a 1W 660nm.

2) What is the mW rating of the 635nm diode inside a DVR-S201. I'm presuming that is single-mode.

Hey rhd, over on pl I was looking around, and here's what I've come up with
I ordered one btw, but the HL63133DG is 170mW at 250mA at 637nm
And they have safely pushed it to ~300mA 200mW and 639nm very safely/easily!

Awesome, you got one too! Mine will be here Thursday.
At 200mW and 639nm, it should look like a bit more than 2x LOCs:
Beam: (660nm 684.52mw) vs. (639nm 200mw)

I wonder if it can be pushed further, but nobody has tried on account of cost?
Is there a "safe-ish" way to test the limits?

Once life settles down this summer, I'd consider doing a GB for these.
 
Is the GB at PL on the 638 170mW still going on? Either way, how much ate we looking at if I want to get in on that?

As far as the DVR-S201 goes, I may have an extra one soon that can be sacrificed; but what I'm betting due to its slow speed is the same 40mW sanyo diodes we saw recently; but I'll find out.
