LPF Secret Santa!

This doesn't have to be about Christmas. I know that there must be some people of different beliefs and this event should not exclude you! Everyone is welcomed!

I think there should be a poll on prices. Personally IM not sure if I can afford to give someone a 40$ gift as I have a family too. So I suppose so nobody gets upset we can all vote on a poll. Originally I didn't have intentions on buying gifts but it seems I may have to. Sorry TJ looks like you wont get a bomb afterall :p.

Anyway. What josherman said... What if someone wants to join but only has a couple of posts but they pay for shipping of the item and the extra amount for a middleman? I would be willing to do this but I would like to hear everyone's opinions.
 





I think that If your International then you should get someone that is in a Closer or same country as you.

It would be really a wast of money for someone from the US has to ship Something overseas that will cost $15 in just shipping and that is if that person shipping international can fit it in a Small Flat rate box. Price is even higher ">$30" for a Medium Flat rate box.

I would rather spend that extra money on the gift then throw it away on shipping cost.

Also I think there should be some Kind of Limit and Minimum.

Maybe 30$ Min and 50$ Max.

If you want to spend more then go right ahead. But dont expect that the person buying you a gift is going to spend more like you did. Only Expect the Minimum.

^^^ One of the Points of Secret Santa is for the person that you are buying for does not know its from you.
 
I think that it is a generous and well intentioned idea. BUT there are lots of potential problems that might serve to tarnish the experience. My attempts to prevent them :

I think that the eligibility requirements could be relaxed. The more people included the better. But there are a few conditions needed as expected.
Each participant should be associated with their level of involvement in lasers. Some of us don't have the ability to build precision instruments (even if we want to) so sending them a bunch of parts wouldn't go over so well. But even a cheapy purchased pointer in a color they don't have would be great. For a proven fabricator one of those wild and large heatsinks might be just the thing to get them to build a crazy showpiece. So you need to know, generally, what would work.
Using this then even the new members would be able to participate.
If you were to define the levels of involvement or classifications then you could also assign the limits on the value of goods. (Value is subjective so this will be tricky though.) So the more you do and/or have done the higher your class.
Of course there are other ways of determining the "class" for each member available as a personal voucher from a higher level member could be taken into account to bump you up a level but there would need to be a limit for that as well. (And that keeps a bunch of new members from vouching for each other to try to artificially raise there levels.)
Even then all you get for going up is a wider/higher limit. (I don't say spending as some members may offer services or other intangible benefits that are extremely difficult to give a simple monetary figure to.) You could expect more as you can give more.
AND yes the whole idea of keeping the shipping to the same continent should be applied. Perhaps even breaking down the continents into regions might work thus encouraging members to get to know your neighbors so to speak. This doesn't preclude anyone from sending their own gifts to members you want to so don't think of it as an unbreakable rule either. You can do anything you want outside of this little feature.

So you sign up, give a listing of the things that you might like to have(generalized), determine your classification level, get the value limits for your level, and then wait for a username to send to. The username should be within your own region so the shipping costs and time should be reasonable.

That should make it fair and relatively easy to apply to just about anyone. Just figuring out the details for classification & limits would be required.

i dont think the gift has to be laser related.

I think you may be over complicating it.

It should be as simple as getting an address from each involved member then randomly pming the address and username to another member from the same country.

Wether or not a member is eligible is decided by jeffery or whoever else helps organize it.

I'll second that... the whole idea of tiers... etc... apply the KISS rule whenever possible.
 
i do believe that if you havent been here over 6months then you shouldn't be allowed. just to be safe to all involved. to be commited to some thing for 6months is a lot more stable than people that just sign up for random info and see this thread.

I guess, the criteria so far are a minimum of 6 month tenure and 500 posts.

As an exception also members for whom a senior veteran can vouch for.

Ideally this would make sense to keep to the veteran forum... but that would exclude a lot of good people who don't post much.

I honestly have no idea how you guys [InfinitusEquitas and wolfman] have 3,400 and 1,400 posts with join dates march 2011 and January 2011. Ive been here over a year now and I thought I posted quite a bit, but apparently not because I'm only at 316 with this post.

Oh well. I'm working my way up, slow and steady :D
