Laser Contests - Support, Suggestions & Questions!

Re: Forum Competitions!

I think I can organize it now.

Everyone comment what you think the first competition should be.

Re: Forum Competitions!

Maybe a panel. I vote for Gun, Issac and a Mod or Vet, Like Dave or Jerry

There will be quite a lot for one person to handle. Plus the mystery grab bag will be involved too.

Re: Forum Competitions!

How about best under $100 laser build, open to all wavelengths (obviously no 520!)? This would open the first competition to a wide selection. We could easily add up the costs of the parts, and usually the hosts. It shouldn't be hard to judge claims with some accuracy. It could even allow the non builders who got great deals join in.

Make it a poll and let the audience decide. Competitors have one week to submit their nomination. The thread creator then creates the poll with the listed submissions, and everyone gets to vote.

I don't mind contributing my time to help, if needed. And, my offer for the moh linear still stands for the grab bag.

Re: Forum Competitions!

Gun if you need help in doing this I can spare some time to help you out. Just send me a PM.

As for the first contest I think that a good start would to see the best DIY laser for less than say... $100.... ??

Re: Forum Competitions!

I'm definitely in favor of voting over having a panel of judges. We need to tap the intelligence of this fine group. :) Here's a proposal:

- Hold a 1-week poll now to pick the subject (based on all of the ideas so far).

- Have a 3-month time limit, with a $150 spending limit (or lower, if the group picks that option).

- We vote on the results based on all of the submissions.

- Each submitter (and anyone else interested) optionally donates $5 toward a cash 'prize fund' (which the winner can purchase laser goods with). :)

As long as we can do polls with potentially dozens of entries, this could be possible.

Thoughts?

Not a bad idea. Some entrants may not want to have to "pay" to enter though. Donations would be cool. I think the mystery grab bag idea is good. Maybe some credit from Vendor sponsors?

Re: Forum Competitions!

If we go the panel route, I think it would have to be determined based off of the competition. If it were best custom host, Ehgemus or Sinner or someone could be on the panel.

I think a competition based on what's already in your competition would be wrong, as some people have acquired many parts of the spectrum, and some only have the basic wavelengths.

Winner gets to choose from the losing entries, which one he wants. For free. Nothing is safe.

That's a good point Bloompyle. Competition specific panel judges are a good idea.

Problem: if someone just made the best laser they could, it would be very bad to be forced to give it up. 150 dollars risk for each person is a lot. You would see few players.

Re: Forum Competitions!

The Saw reference wasn't serious. I don't think many would enter.

Though the panel thing I did mean. If we get people who strictly deal in certain realms of laser building, they would know the challenges and subtleties to that art. Like with host building, melding the joints well, no spurs, metal choice, etc.

Re: Forum Competitions!

Who's getting Sinner hosts cheap enough for a $100 build??

I don't want to talk about what I have in my SSW...

Re: Forum Competitions!

No, no, no. the panel, the judging panel. Getting people who focus on the subject of the competition, in that example, custom hosts, to judge someone on a custom host.

On another note, I got my MSV1 and 2 for $75 ;)

Re: Forum Competitions!

I think that the competition should be judged by the users and no one else. It is not the same to have 3 judges (even if they are very knowledgable) than to have the opinion of tens of them.
I might be a host builder and cosider one host to be better looking than another, but that is just based on my personal opinion. As even a designer might tell you that the most beautifull car in the world is a Ferrari F40 another designer might tell you that the Lamborghini Miura was the most beautiful car of all times.

So in a poll there are many people and all of them can define an opinion. On the other hand we all know lasers, we all know the hosts, and we all know what could be a nice laser and what not.
