Re: Forum Competitions!

Poll, it's the most Democratic. I like the panel idea for organization though. Experienced builders for example would have knowledge of the history and categories that would make sense and what's involved in using the different hosts. Likewise a professional photographer could provide insight on what's involved in taking certain shots; long exposure, special effects etc. Of course people commenting in the Poll thread would accomplish that as well.

Re: Forum Competitions!

Not a bad idea. Some entrants may not want to have to "pay" to enter though. Donations would be cool. I think the mystery grab bag idea is good. Maybe some credit from Vendor sponsors?

~ LB

Yeah, I meant this as an optional donation (from entrants or non-entrants), not an entry requirement.

You know, we could mix it up, with all of the ideas here. (One competition have judges, the next one can be democratic, etc).

We need some organization here, and a way to pick from all of these options, in order to move forward. If we're not going to vote on the options, we'd need to just elect someone to be the coordinator, and make the call. (Gun)
Or, someone needs to set up a vote. (I'd vote for a vote).

(NOTE: See 2 posts down for voting rules)

Here's a summary of most of the options mentioned so far, with votes:

Theme options:
- (0) Best overall host
- (0) Best vintage build
- (0) Most creative
- (0) Best craftsmanship
- (0) Best single-mode build
- (0) Best creative photograph
- (0) Best commercial host under $30 customized
- (0) Best custom member builder host; customized/diode selection
- (0) Best mod on shit WL corpses
- (1) Best use of copper (andrewb,)
- (0) Best DIY hacks/mods/builds
- (0) Best under $100 build
- (1) Best under $100 build *from existing collections* (SBA,)
- (0) Best Ehgemus or Sinner host

Duration options:
- (1) 1 week (SBA,)
- (0) 1 month
- (1) 2 months (andrewb,)
- (0) 3 months

Winner-choosing options:
- (2) Democratic vote/poll (SBA, andrewb)
- (0) Designated panel
- (0) Individual judge

Polling duration:
- (2) 1 week (SBA, andrewb)

Prize options:
- (2) Grab-bag of donated parts, sent to Avery (SBA, andrewb)
- (0) Cash prize, based on donations
- (0) 'Bloompyle cutthroat option' (winner chooses prize from other entries, lol)

If there's anything I missed, lemme know and I'll edit this post.

I think these are all great ideas, and we should mix it up. The only question is how to pick/organize the first competition. Perhaps a vote is most fair.

Thanks for putting that all together andrewb :gj: It's good to see it all up there.

Re: Forum Competitions!

If people want, feel free to nominate from the above, and we can see what the group prefers.

Pick one option per category, post your preferences in this thread, and I'll keep a running tally in the above post.

For example, my nominations would be "best use of copper, 2 months, democratic vote, 1 week, grab bag prize"

Re: Forum Competitions!

Best non lasing gas system.

Basically, the best looking steam punk use of non lasing gas tubes. This one could be fun!

Re: Forum Competitions!

For our first one, let's open it up to everyone for maximum interest.

Best under $100 build from existing collections. No extended time frame; 1 week submission entries, 1 week polling.

Grab bag...let the donations go to Avery and the forum.

And, thanks to Andrew! I am so glad I looked here again...I was a 1/3 into doing exactly the same kind of post.

Grab bag? What? Lost here, must've missed something.

1 Week submision would work for you guys that live in the US and to get something delivered takes 2-4 days. To me a week is not even enough to buy a part and have it delivered. Usually takes about 2...
I say 1 month submision is fair for everyone...
Also we could do a contest per month so that at the end of the year we can make like a calendar of all the winners.. (obviously for this year it won't work)...

Re: Forum Competitions!

Existing collections, meaning you've already built it. You could submit in an hour :p

Yes! This was my idea for the first competition. If we want to generate interest, initially, then we do something to get the most entries, and not make it too long to keep peoples attention.

For another competition, I like the idea of a time-line build off. Just not for the first time around.

BP, the grab bag idea came about because guys like moh and I are willing to donate items..well, Moh can afford to donate a whole Kryton...my resources are...shall we say, limited.

Re: Forum Competitions!

Updated post #66 above with my and SBA's nominations.

Others, (norbyx, bloompyle, etc), feel free to post your nominations.

NOTE: To keep things simple, please try to state all 5 category picks in one post. (See my example in post #68 above)

Re: Forum Competitions!

1 week for this one is good, but for future endeavors, 1 month.

Would it be cheating if I bought some epoxy for a build?

Re: Forum Competitions!

Way to go, andrewb! I'd rep you again if I could.

Thanks, man. :thanks:. Hopefully we can get enough people to agree to the nomination process and post their choices, and we can get some fair kind of organization here.

BTW, I love the grab bag idea, as most people who've been building for a while has some collection of 'extra parts' hanging around that they could donate/get rid of, to a good cause. I know I do. :)

Re: Forum Competitions!

I guess if we start with the under $100 build, we don't have to worry about classifications like host/diode/build quality/overall look...Those things could just be considered by those polling.

Though, those things should possibly be considered for future competitions.

Re: Forum Competitions!

I like the idea of donations going to keep the forum running SBA. I have a 10pk of 405nm ebay pens on the way. I'll contribute one to the Grab bag
