The one I tested had no spike at all. Those might be the best drivers for the job. I'll test the minimum dropout and report back...

edit: they need 3.6V to get ~700mA, 3.7V to get to ~800mA, and 3.8V or more outputs ~900mA

I did one test. A freshly charged 18650 measured at 4.14V with the DX driver (SS34) gives a whopping 1140mA current at the diode side. No problem for the laser diode, it was cooled by the huge CPU cooler.
But at this current it will tricky to build the laser in a C6 host. The Aurora C6 445nm overheat fast at 1.2W.

Another test with an used 18650 battery, 3.9V gives 700mA at the diode.
These DX drivers are very voltage dependant to deliver the current. I don't know if they are reliable in the long run.

Just finished my second one...

This time in a Stainless Steel RL-118 host, and set at 800mA's.

It's 550mW's. (650-G-1)

So I guess I didn't get one of those freak efficiency diodes, but it's all good... :beer:

Little side note, the battery current draw on both of my builds, is very close to the output power (both builds using V5 FlexDrive, and 650-G-1 lens)

I know there is no real correlation there, but it's just kind of a cool coincidence...

* 1st build - 450mA / 315mW - battery current draw is 300mA's with full charged 10440

* 2nd build - 800mA's / 550mW - battery current draw is 550mA's with a full charged AW RCR123 protected cell

I know for sure it is set at 800mA's, because I double checked before I connected the diode. Just shows how nice the V5 FlexDrive bucks! :)

That's that, host is from Rayfoss, that new one. Keep your eyes open for a new heatsink for it :)

I've submitted a new thread in Pro Store section, as soon as a moderator approves it, you will see it. I am selling heatsinks for the host, and in the thread I've provided assembly instructions for it.

Two of the possible causes may be:

A small imperfection in one part of the reflective substrate of the laser diode chip.

Or, less likely it's a flaw in the laser diode window and this is not seen with the naked eye.

Maybe, maybe not.
 
So are we saying 800mA is a safe current for these babys?
