GB: PL520 murder fund

They don't rate diodes at their max, they rate them at a lower output that achieves a very long lifetime.

It's not usually about the lifetime, they rate them at a current that will make them degrade slowly.
At the high ends we run diodes at they degrade a lot faster, but it's okay since it's not in a projector that can be run 6 hours at a time :p

Where in the hell have I been? I just read through & am sorry I missed the donation part of all this. So a few of you have gotten these now & Apex has one doing around 120mw?? Has one of these been murdered yet? Sorry for the questions but I was hibernating & missed all of this until 20 minutes ago! I can't wait to see more pictures of this wavelength :D

The two that have been shipped to me to go on the chopping block have not yet arrived, it will be soon though :)

Can't wait to see where they peak & average out, with and without tec  If another round to murder a 3rd one of these takes off for whatever reason (doubt it) count me in for a donation, otherwise it'll just go into LPF. Thanks for doing this everyone!

My diode hasn't even come out of the shipping package yet. Kind of waiting for results before I order a driver, and of course I am still waiting for my host :) cannot wait though! In the meantime I am overloading on 532 to help me appreciate the 520 when I see it. :)

If one does die in testing we should decan it and get some pictures of the diodes structure. This was a request from the discussion over @ PL on these and would be great info.:)

Well, I don't have a thorlabs de-canner or the best macro photography equipment, but I can try and dremel one and take a picture of it through a lens or send the carcasses off to a member who has a de-canner tool and macro photography equipment.

I'm pretty sure what I got was the upper limit or at least near it. I was hitting walls of around 120mW until I started reducing the diode's temperature drastically. Though I do admit that one single test subject tested by one person is hardly enough data to know what all the diodes can do.

I will of course do some more testing and if I have time I will make a plot. My goal off the bat was to jump up to the max efficient output of the diode to give people an idea of what they are capable of.
Man, I've been gone for a few days and I came back, read through this thread from what I last saw in it, and I must say, exciting results so far! If these little guys can consistently manage 100mW+, that's simply incredible! :D

I wonder if Blord has decanning abilities. I have seen him do straight up insane quality macro photography of the inside of M140s.

Oh yeah that's right. Stick the diode in a drill's chuck and spin it with a blade against the can. He has a badass camera as well.

I used a Dremel tool to decan the diode. I wouldn't recommend it. It is way to coarse with rough hands. :)

Really looking forward to the results. Sorry I wasn't able to donate anything.
