GB: PL520 murder fund

Hmm, well I was using my Ophir to test mine. I am rather excited that mine passed 100mW with ease. I think I'm going to let mine sit at 100mW though in the hopes that it lasts for a long time.

Also, While using my G2 the divergence is incredible. After about 70 feet the dot is roughly 3/4 of an inch across and that's after bouncing off two mirrors. I cannot do any free air testing until I make it handheld but it appears to have superior divergence to even my S06J and completely annihilates my Skylaser 532nm for divergence.

This is just making me more excited to kill the diodes :)

Tracking # is LZ675202277US if anyone wants to know the status.

It has been down since I tripped over the cord and ripped some of the wires off the back. I need to rewire it and have not had time. Probably should have followed though and got it in a box when I built it.:( I was planning to get it back up and running this weekend and measure another PL520 against both meters.:)

On testing mine I hit the efficiency wall and my output started dropping like a stone so you should be able to easily test the full power of the diodes without having to completely kill them.

Hell you could then sell the diodes and donate the money to the forum. I don't think anyone would be against that as well.

I got mine in today! But it will be staying in the package until my host arrives from sinner....wonder what shipping times are like from Dubai.....hm. VERY excited that these are able to be pushed. DTR, your preliminary measurements were so low that it made me have to readjust my hopes. I had already purchased it though when your results went up.

So now to have double the possible output makes me exuberant!

Hit 164mW at 400mA on my TEC unit. I didn't hold it there because I feared for the diode. I don't think I'm going to push it that hard again. Now I hope to just maintain a nice 100-120mW output in a handheld with it. I will be very satisfied. The divergence is just so awesome I can't contain myself. Its so far superior(less than half the divergence) to my other 532nm lasers even when on a G2 lens LOL. All my friends think the color is so cool and its a unanimous decision that 532nm is officially ugly and 520nm is where its at.

No intent to thread jack but does anyone have a suggestion for a good solid host for me to use for this build? I am looking to run on one protected 18650 with a round 16.8mm X-Boost driver. I would like a sleek/smooth/classy look for this build without too much bulk. I am even open to a custom host. I plan to post a build thread.

Check out my thread "520nm Diodes, What Host Will YOU use?" There are some good suggestions in there! Did you notice an increase in the wavelength as you pushed it harder? For me I think how hard I drive it will depend on the wavelength results.

I didn't get a visibly noticeable wavelength shift anywhere in my tests. The whole time it was still obviously blue-green. I even compared it side by side to 532nm when I ran it at 300mA with just a heatsink as well as when it was TEC cooled at 400mA. Both times made the 532nm look ugly.

What current are you going to run it at normally now that you know it can make upwards of 150mw at 400ma? That's really a surprising output for one of these diodes and I wonder if osram really knows what the diodes are capable of :D

I am sure the engineers at Osram laugh his pants off. They have done this test in their laboratory and I am pretty sure they know the real upper limit of the diodes. :)

I know that my tests would not be anything surprising to Osram themselves but it is possible that I have one that is above normal. I am likely going to settle on 280mA for my current so my diode lives long and so my duty cycles are nice and long.

Yeah I don't think someone would sell a product without testing it to its limits.

"Lets see, here we have a direct green diode. We have done testing on it to 50mW, seems fine. We got bored so we ate some cheetos and played checkers. It can probably do more but meh, 50mW will do. Wanna grab a beer?" - Said no sales-minded researcher ever.

It was a joke im not that clueless :( But I still cant wait to see the upper limit of what these diodes can output

I'm pretty sure what I got was the upper limit or at least near it. I was hitting walls of around 120mW until I started reducing the diode's temperature drastically. Though I do admit that one single test subject tested by one person is hardly enough data to know what all the diodes can do.

I will of course do some more testing and if I have time I will make a plot. My goal off the bat was to jump up to the max efficient output of the diode to give people an idea of what they are capable of.
