I loose my cool sometimes too, and I apologize.

We are all hobbyist here, and its good to have competition. This helps the whole community by giving us more choices, and possibly cheaper products. Who doesnt want cheaper products? Yes some may not give the service Jay, and others do, but at least we have a choice. In the long run it brings more people into the hobby. Its not right to jump down another sellers throat because they didnt protect their product. We do live in a Capitalist society last I checked. I like Jay, Pyro, Matt, ect, its not personal, its business.

For the record...

I didn't start this. I know that there is nothing I can do to stop other sellers from copying. Except to mention it, and see if they are a person that will show mutual respect and common courtesy.

In this case, I did not mention it publicly. We had talked via e-mail, and I knew his stance. So I did not mention anything here. Because I don't like drama.

FP talked to me via PM, and then he wanted to make light of things, because other issues with the seller were heating up with problems and stuff...

So I hope you can see that I was trying to avoid drama. I was not going to say a thing about this.

You and I are very different. You love drama. And when things cool down, you want to bring it back. And get the drama going.

On the other hand, I do find the discussion about intellectual property to be a very interesting topic.

But I have never tried to argue any legality issues. I always have said in the past (when this similar issue came up), that it's just a matter of respect for one another and common courtesy...

Jay Your designs and innovation are truly Top-Notch, and many of Us use bits and pieces of Your work here and there on Our own projects. When someone blatantly copies one of Your builds They have crossed the unwritten line, and this is especially true when They don't even give You the credit due for the original work. Imitation is the highest form of flattery so They say, but failing to obtain Your blessing and continuing anyway is STEALING in My book.

On the other side of it, I really like to show details of different builds and stuff for DIY... (of course that's how I learn from others as well)

It's great when people show their 'spin' on custom stuff...

It's only bad for me when another seller wants to do the exact same thing for cheaper! :crackup:

Putting a FlexModP3 in a handheld, was a great idea originally from DTR...

I just put my own 'spin' on the mounting of it. Using a different host...

In fact, I'm building a really custom set up for a member who wants a FlexModP3 Maglite 'flipped' backwards. So that he can put the pistol grip shown in my thread, on the very end of the host.

In order to do that, there are some trick mods involved...

It means using a tube for the driver to be protected in. (using fiberglass tubing) And a contact pad on the end. So that the heatsink/driver assembly is a 'drop in assembly', direct contact to the battery positive. It means getting the negative via the diode case pin via the host. Because the switch is at the back end, instead of the front now...

This same set up will actually fit in the host that DTR used for his Frankenstein build. So it is just a different way to mount the FlexModP3 in a host that has room. The RL-2088 'Frankenstein' host, needs to have the center spacer removed, as well as the pill. And my custom drop in FlexModP3 module will make contact directly to the battery pack. It's pretty cool...

Also the member is new. You cant expect him to know whats going on, or how we do things here. And he's not even selling kits, he is selling finished lasers, which Jay does not do. So I think this argument it a waste of time. I'll say it again, protect your design, or dont cry when someone copies it. Business is business.

I pretty much agree. Anyone who pm's me and asks to sell something knows how I feel about it. I always tell them to go ahead, If they can beat my price and get business then more power to them.
I REALLY wanted to do some big mag lites, the only thing stopping me was Jayrob's voltage indicator.....in my head that put it in the "original design" category so I decided not to touch it.
Some may follow a set of unwritten rules for common courtesy between sellers, but in the end I really am a cheap dirty bastard and am always out for a quick buck (ie: aurora 18650 kit)
some people pretend like there is some sort of higher purpose to this? It's all about the money. I certainly don't do it for fun. I don't particularly enjoy spending 10 hours non-stop on the lathe, but it's easy money that I can earn on my own terms.
Same for the rest of the sellers. This is a business. nobody is getting rich here, but it's still a business.

Huh :thinking: a business well I realy never thought of it like that, as a business is supposed to make money and I know I sure don't !
I do this because I like it and I like helping people to make things and to realize there dreams be that a laser or what ever.
There's no greater pleasure than knowing you have helped some one to sucseed

I kinda feel sorry for those of you that feel you have to come here to make a living maby if you had studyed
harder in school you would have a good paying job and not feel you would need to come here and copy others ideas to support your self 's...
any one who dosn't like standing in front of a lathe for 12 hours making below min wage maby should change something, I have been doing
that for over two years now and I love helping people that way.

This is a hobbie and not an income for me, I worked in electronics for over 40 years and plan on using that knowledge to HELP others not get rich but to HELP !

if only more people thought about the other guy instead of them self's so much this would be a better place to live

I would challenge any one here to take just one day and go around asking other people what you can do for them, ask not what can you do for me, but what can I do for you ! spread some positivity and good will :yh:

Here's a few pictures of just how sparkles was building his rigs and I must say I hope everone who bought one from him has no problems !
First off he was using solid conductor telephone wire to connect the laser diode and from what it looks like I would say he just learned to solder when he started this project, all the solder joints are seriously fucked up !!!
Some of his connections weren't even soldered like the splice in the diode leads was just twisted together and no tape no heatshrink just bare wires hanging out in there.
He had the driver's regulator chip screwed to the back of the heatsink now that in it's self is not a problem where the problem lays is that the screw had no washer of any kind under it flat or lock and was loose so it was only a matter of time befor it came out and shorted something on the driver board, FACEPALM !
I would say at this point for thoese that bought a laser from him, it's only a matter of time :gun:
I just started looking at this so when I find out more I will post it here.
Check out how he split the + power lead (fat white wire) comming from the switch so he could connect it to two different places on the driver board.
I think I'm going to start a new thread, BAD BUILDERS AND WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR !

This is exactly as I recieved it, I haven't touched a single wire in there yet !

Well it was easy to disconnect the laser diode I didn't even have to touch it, it just
fell loose while I was cleaning thermal greese off the regulator, FACEPALM...

For any one that bought one of these I will be here and ready to give you some professional help making it right,
I would suggest NOT powering it up till it's looked at !!!
I do have the proper wire for this job :crackup:

Yikes. I've done some questionable building myself but NEVER this bad and of
course it's one thing to whip up something quick and dirty for yourself to tinker with,
but an entirely different solidity must be achieved when you are selling the item.
