Bradpr If You are unable or unwilling to adjust/modify Your Laser when It arrives I suggest sending it to the Vet closest to You, and let Them do the necessary adjustments. Most if not all the Vets would look at it for Free, and just have You pay for shipping and parts.
 





Ya Im in the same boat as Bradpr, The same day I bought, everything went down. He has shipped mine today.. I think. Not to concerned on it breaking, I will give me something to fix and learn from. I really appericate the heads up a few ppl on here try and give me. But as I sent money. Check email, thats when the warnings started coming.. lol min to late. ah well

I'm here to learn, so I'm definitely willing to adjust the current. My understanding of the FlexMP3 is that 1/4 turn on the gain adjustment screw = approx 100mA (thanks to JayRob for that info). Do I have that correct? If I want to test my circuit after making an adjustment, can I just remove the diode and connect my multimeter to the output wires, or do I need to connect a test load?


Dave - Thanks for the advice on Lasorb. Other than the physical difficulty in getting that module 1cm away from the diode in a flashlight host, why aren't these included in the builds & kits on LPF? It seems like a good safety investment and a small cost.

1/2 turn is about 100mA's...

More about the FlexModP3 driver. If it was set up properly, there is just one of the 3 pots that you would adjust current with...

It is about 100mA's per 1/2 turn. Clockwise is more current.

Ease/simplicity of build, available space in a hand held, cost.

What does a lasorb exactly do Dave? I've never had it explained, like how does it protect the diode?

I meant that I don't 'own' any patents or anything like that. I realize that a Maglite is a very common and popular light. So there are many modifications using it.

In fact, I make a flashlight mod with them too. But my mod is different than other mods. And it is the only one with a battery monitor...

But this situation is a little different, in that Sparkles is claiming to have the exact same build. So yeah, that's not too smooth of a move.

I didn't like him quoting me out of context either...

For me, it's just a matter of respect and common courtesy.

Have you tried to incorporate one into a flashlight/handheld host? I can definitely see the space consideration, but if it provides a significant level of protection to the diode, then its probably worthwhile to offer as an option...especially in builds using hosts that have ample room.

Jayrob - have you had any experience with Lasorbs in your Maglite builds?
 
I'm sure it's a good product. But I have not yet used one, so I don't have much to offer on advice...

From what I understand, they are not really necessary in a hand held. But if you have room for it, then it can't hurt. It's just added protection...
 
I just received an email from Eric (aka Sparkles) replying to my request for information on how to dial the current down on his build. He tells me that the current cannot be adjusted on the FlexModP3 driver! Since I've never built a laser with this driver, and I know he's full of carp, what does this say to his ability to actually build a laser? If he didn't know this, would it have been possible for him to have assembled these lasers and know that the drivers are set to 1.8A??? I have to question if he even built these.
 
He is just jacking you around like he has everyone on these forums. I'd freakin file a paypal dispute, and when you got your money back, send him his piece of junk.
Can't adjust the current? What an idiot. Wonder how he got these things to even turn on if he couldn't adjust the current

The Lasorb basically limits the power going to the diode. Voltage spikes are not a huge problem for us with the types of drivers we have historically use in hand-helds and given that most of our builds use a single 3.6V or (when two batteries are used) one of the smaller capacity batteries.

The reason I mentioned it at all was that there has been discussion about the flexmod driver allowing (causing?) some sort of spike that was popping diodes and these lasers use the flexmod rather than one of the more "typical" drivers we utilize in our builds. In addition, these lasers use two 18650's. Two, fully charged, 18650's will provide 8.4V. Add that to the higher available current in the batteries we are beginning to use with the 445 and you may have a combination that will pop the diode

This is NOT a huge problem or it would be MUCH more prevalent in the discussion, but it is still being "examined."

Either that or they do not actually have a flexmod in them ;) I'll wait until someone with some experience opens one up. The flexmod is VERY adjustable

I will be willing to take pics as I mess around with mine. I got a laser temp checker thingy magig.. im going to be checking temps on run cycles of 1 min, 5 min and maybe a 8 min run on it. And if it breaks, I will be taking it a part, again.. taking pictures and posting them for all to see. That and I help me learn
