Distant early warning... 445nm to be banned soon?

They'll never be able to police the information on the internet. If the 445nm sections is shut down then the topic will jump sections. There is no stopping it, short of shutting down the whole forum, and unless they shut them all down they'll never cease communication on the topic.

But I don't think it'll come to that. They'll target the big foreign suppliers first and crack down on illegal importing first. The GBs organized here account for a very small percentage of the actual 445nm lasers in existence. Or at least it will get to that point. Remember when 405nm diodes were rare and could only be purchased on forums? Now you can buy 5mW 405nm pointers on eBay for 10 bucks.

If the 445nm diode would have stayed on the forums and only the forums then it wouldn't be an issue. The problems is that Companies like Wicked and LaserGlow advertise on PopSci magazine! WTF is that! They're technically illegal! They've brought all the hype of the diode into the spot light and it doesn't help that Wicked made their Arctic look like a toy. They advertise it as such as well. At least the Atlantis is in an appropriate host. IMO I could care less if they're shut down. I make my lasers anyways. :yh:

It looks like the "laserist" community has bitten off more than it could chew. A lot of us have hoped for cheaper and more powerful blue lasers, and many of our dreams came true on June 9, 2010, but that day also brought fear and paranoia.

By the way, Wicked refers to its new laser as the Arctic series. Does this mean that Wicked will release other models with different outputs? My sixth sense tells me that there will be two more lasers in the series; one will be in the 500-700 mW range, and the other will be in the 1.2-1.5 W range.

I dont think they mind to much the hobbyist playing with their projectors they dont want large company's doing it on large scale.
i expect wicked and nova to not sell these for very long but the market has millions of these projectors so they cant just take them back.
We all need to stay calm and wait for this storm to pass, we still have our 12x 405nm lasers pushing out huge power levels, this is just a bit more.
Give it a month and the frenzy will die down along with all the crap surrounding it.

I've lurked here on and off and early on someone let me know about the Arctic and I bit. I've had lesser lasers before and being of a technical and scientific bent I could hardly resist.

Imagine my surprise/amusement/horror as this went from laser pointer to fake light saber to death ray in the press.

The reality of anything rarely means much in the press as sensationalism sells.

Being a new kid on the block and having signed up because I want to know when people start getting theirs and how it works, I doubt that anyone is going to consider me "established" and rightfully so. That said I am not new to these sorts of things and the hyperbole is annoying. Last thing we need is the DC types trying to save us from ourselves when virtually everyone on these forums (new to oldest) has a better idea of what responsible use entails.

Anyway, a rant is perhaps a poor way to introduce myself.

In another thread people were asking questions of those who ordered. FWIW I'm 4713X and I'll let folks here know when it arrives and my impressions.
 
i wonder if people went throught the same thing when green lasers began to become cheaper and more powerful back in the day.
 
Also, what an awful title. The wavelength of 445nm is going to be banned? Someone alert God, and get a filter on that sunlight. Not to mention filters on every single incandescent lightbulb and many other light sources.

OH, does it mean 445nm laser diodes? Yeah, good luck with that.
 
hey I'm a new member but a dedicated enthusiast, and I for one am not afraid. Yes I would very much like to own a preassembled laser that resembles a $2000 toy *lets face it, noone needs a <500w Spyder III mounted on their M4. eh.
the only reason I'm concerned about this topic is because I'm not well equipped with knowledge on how to build my own handheld or standalone laser system from hardware lying around. I'm not saying I can't learn, but let's face it this is an amazing opportunity for hobbyists to own such technology at such low price. if you read my other posts from last night on couple different forums youd know that despite my uber NUUBSTROM I firmly believe that there is nothing serious going to happen, there will be no scare tactics by the big corporation media nor would this be brought up to government officials in the first upcoming months *say june-august* DEFINITELY not until we see some evidence of these used in the manner for which they were not intended for, careless youtube videos of paranoid homeowners scaring away children or animals off their property (god forbid), and a whole list of immoral behavior one can only imagine. Despite what the FDA regulations state, I strongly believe the customs wont be able to hold back the WL shipments one by one, because there are no written laws against it as of right now. and to bring up the media again, they have no detailed information of what these lasers are, other than what they can read on WL website, and notice how WL has removed the phrase "set skin on fire instantly" in their item description for fear of negative feedback. smart, but they shouldnt have put that there in the first place O.O idiots. so yes, WL have dug their own media grave, now lets just hope the people who have purchased one and actually receive one *knock on wood* are as smart and responsible as we can only hope they are. the only thing the media can use at this point to attack our community is the fearsome safety labels provided on WL website, laser safety websites and wikipedia. along with a handful of 445nm DIY laser youtube videos and lasers of other wavelengths such as green/purple burning lasers. so they can easily mislead and divert attention from the Arctic, and place the entire laser community on alert.
Final words.. we should be worried, but not for the time being. we're not on death row yet gentlemen.

If shit hits the fan I suppose we can rely on DIYs... but I'd say in that case restrict purchase of DIYs that people assemble to known "mature" people on this forum :angel: otherwise we have people.. "LET'S SEE IF IT REALLY CAN SET PEOPLE'S SKIN ON FIRE!!!!!"

negative publicity from this thread alone?

this is a specific thread discussing the legality of 445nm 1W> lasers. granted the name of the thread is misleading folks, but we're getting all kinds of opinions which might be helpful to anyone who's interested.
 
Also worth noting, the WHOLE THING is blown way out of proportions.
How many people bought the things? around 4-5k? That is insanely insignificant. The governmental agencies shouldn't even have this as a blip on their radar.
