Casio seems to be potting projectors

I used to like ka-c-o. They still deserve some respect for bringing us these diodes, but they should know better than to do all this crap to keep us from using them. It's not like we're stealing stuff. In my mind, if you give someone money and they give you something tangible in return, that item is as much yours as that money is theirs. How come we can't say "here's $800 for your projector, but you aren't allowed to use this money to do such and such"?

btw, I like the idea of a massive find and replace to clear ka-c-o's name from the forums. It's not censorship, it's just protecting our best interests.

Well, as some members have said here - it's not a matter of them being "nice or not nice"; its CYA and risk management.

Nobody here should expect a company to risk massive lawsuits and monetary loss just because we want to build lasers.

I don't think it's a matter of "want to or don't want to", it's a matter of them doing what's necessary for them to avoid liabilities down the line.

Additionally, they put in tons of R&D $$$ into these projectors -- imagine if certain markets decide to ban the PROJECTORS because of the ease of access to the diodes. They don't want that. They shouldn't have to want it. They're the ones who are fronting the money to make these diodes viable to normal people, and it is VERY imaginable that the result of extractions such as the Arctic could lead to wholesale banning of the projectors in certain markets - unless the diodes were made less easy to get at. That would be a huge loss for C., and one they really shouldn't have to take.

Allowing ease of access to 1W diodes goes a lot differently in court than potted,riveted, tamproof screws keeping them in.

If we can all be responsible for a while going forward here - we'll possibly all get green with minimal hurdles. But if it continues to be a dog and pony show, expect epoxied 'bars' once direct green happens.

If you're going to get angry, don't get angry at the manufacturer; get angry at litigious society and irresponsible users.

I started typing up a response to that, along the lines of "Well, they already used non-standard screws and loc-tited them, that should be enough for the courts," but this way, there is a mechanical AND chemical aspect to the extraction, making it require just that much more knowledge and skill to get these apart. That definitely would solidify their defense if any idiot tried to take 'em to court.

I think they should also make you solve a complex Maths problem before you can get to the diodes too.

On a slightly related note, how about this for a business model: find anything that can hurt someone, and sue the company for it! We'd make so much money!!! Who's in?

For one, it keeps this post off the radar. Google searches for 'c@$10 laser' spelled the normal way yield a high number of forum posts even from this forum. Let's not make it easier for them to find us plotting against them? :undecided: I think a forum wide auto-replace would not be a bad idea right about now since they started throwing around legal threats.
 
Damn that looks exactly the same as Micro$oft placing the same garbage over their IC's on the Xbox 360. The was a "easy" way to remove it.
 
The black potting is easily removed by soaking overninght in 4 parts methylene chloride and 1 part methanol. Nonflammable paint stipper also will do, same main ingredients with a gelling compound... Dimethylformamide is also able to remove it even faster, but it's watched.. Methelene chloride/methanol rots it off; DMF will actually disolve it.

Nice in theory, but keep the fluid and vapor away from the output window. Some of the output windows are not hermetically sealed on the 445 blues. I have two here that are lumia generators from leakage during cleaning using ultra pure methanol and acetone. I do not feel like cutting them open, but it seems some of the windows are just glued in rather then frit sealed, and cleaning the windows allows seepage, which allows the glue or gettering material to move onto the window. This is from older gen diodes, it is not a new factory reaction to harvesting. A friend has confirmed this on one of his when he cleaned them after a show.

We are not plotting against them. They are plotting against us. All we are doing is fighting for our right to do what we want with OUR PROPERTY!

If I buy a projector from them I OWN IT. I am NOT renting it from them. THEY HAVE NO RIGHT to tell me what to do with it!
 
HELP PLEASE---

ii just ordered another a-140 and i asked if it was going to be from the same 'batch' That BUY.COM had when I ordered
and got my last one- on Oct 11- I have 24 hours to cancell the order-- so what I am =asking is--Has anyone gotten one from Buy.com(Calf.) in the last 3 weeks that was potted-- my last one did have the tri-wing screws and a tad more lock-tite on the threads but I had no probs , however if the one I just ordered has the array potted I would maybe be wanting to return it- which will cost me the return shipping-- I know that one member just got one from Newegg that was potted and he returned is a defective- Also the cost for this one went up by 50+$ -- which I will have to pass on to my customers in the form of a 2$ increase- but I would be pissed if I had to deal with a potted array--- anybody got info on this??

the chances of it being potted are slim to none. just relax and get to it.

I'm all for auto replace. String searching using the fuzzy functions will still find it. Once its found and defined, its a direct target because its now a defined pattern. We all know whats being referred to and calling it a C or N pretty well kills a search as its looking for only a C. How many words start with a C?
Still, doesn't prevent being "moled".
 
What a stupid problem to endure for some of the smartest people I have encountered.
Cassholio could get by with a sticker on the back of the array saying "by removing/disassembling this component you are violating the proper care and use of this product" or something more legally defined and they would be covered in court by declaring this is against their recommended use of the product.
A 5 cent sticker would be easier to deal with than a PITA potting epoxy. ^_^
