Casio seems to be potting projectors

well, it's not surprising manufacturers would take these measures, assuming this is true.

think about it. they likely do not want to make it easy for DIYers and whippersnappers to get access to a 2 watt laser diode.

do we really think they care as long as we are buying the projectors. The press releases, the tri-wing screws and possibly this potting epoxy could just be attempts to show that they are trying to discourage this. They could have put more serious measures in place a long time ago to try and keep us out.

And for the potting epoxy I think a dremel with a small drill bit and some finesse could take care of this.
 
What I'd the epoxy is within the diode slot around the pins as well? Are you going to drill through to the diode? I don't think drilling is going to be the answer.

You are probably right. But what I was thinking was that pink spacer they put on there to hold the diode center would stop the epoxy from going any further.:thinking:
 
From my readings, It is best not to use the name "C&$10" in any forum posts. I smell lawyer type rats in the alley.

It might be better (and more convenient) to just buy the diodes from the manufacturer directly.
 
I don't get it.

If, as I'd reasonably expect every genuine enthusiast here to be in support of, you don't want to make life harder for ourselves regarding access to these diodes, then why on earth are we all talking about how to get around it all?????

If I were a member of team-Casio and I was out to help their engineers find ways to make life as difficult as possible for enthusiasts making use of their rightfully paid for kit, then I'd come straight here and read all these posts about how to get around it with great interest!!!

This recent post is dubious enough as it is, considering the lack of any evidence and the OP's obvious reference to the lack of it right from the start.

How hard would it have been for any truly concerned "member" to take a couple of pictures of this apparent revelation?

Call me paranoid, and it could well turn out to be true, but regardless, if you really don't want to make things more difficult, you'll all keep your creative solutions to this to yourselves or strictly in PM's.

It's prohibitively expensive. Even in orders of hundreds it's going to be several hundred to a thousand dollars a diode. Only when your order tens of thousands or even millions do you get into the <$100 a diode range.
 
I don't believe that "C&$10" likes to see their name posted on laser forums related to the diodes which they only purchase. There's legal crap starting to fly around on PL.

Damn. I was aware that those diodes were pretty expensive when sold individually, but I had no idea that it was still several thousand dollars each. :eek:

(it's not a secret, it's a common thing used for remove epoxy ..... only if you are sure that is epoxy, ofcourse ;) ..... if is phenolic or polyurethanic resin, you need something different :p)
 
Hmm.. i have my doubts about this whole story, getting a sort of "pics or it didn't happen" response.

If there is epoxy on the diodes themselves, removing them will certainly prove more difficult, but perhaps not impossible. I'll have to see pictures of the problem to say anything sensible though.
