Okay :) I'll have to practice first though, I've only used a lathe once, and that was a few years ago :p

in the future id like to commission you next build. an improved version with an adjustable focusing lens for burning. and a red pilot beam for knowing where the beam will strike.

Guess it could be done, it would be better with a 5mW green laser. Brighter and tighter divergence. It would add extra bulk onto the optics tray if it comes out of the same aperture, and then there would have to be a side clicky for operating the 445nm.
It would be easier to just mount it above the aperture, then the beam would be a little down of where the green is shining.
It's a good idea since the 4.4W will burn/mark anything it makes contact with.

Hmm. Well, from the same aperture would be awesome... so you know exactly where you're aiming.

A separate aperture for the target laser would work too, except that you would only be able to align it to be accurate at a specific distance. Not that it matters for a pointer.

IMHO a red beam would be a lot more badass though :eg:

Wish I could, but if you shine the output of one PBS into another PBS it will split the beam.

If I were to do a quad build the diodes would likely be aligned like this : : and the top row would be knife edged with the bottom ones, then the output of both of the knife edges would be combined in a cube.

More than two diodes creates more alignment, a larger beam with knife edging, a lot more expensive and a lot more heat. Two diodes is simple :cool:

Agreed, is the cube split related to polarization? if so can't that be changed with the pbs optics or another filter.. I know it really is best with two :)

I looked at doing a dual build with a pbs cube a while back with a peltier but I couldn't find another diode to go with my freak diode that was putting out 1.4 watts with 700ma input :gun:
