I find that you don't get the fuzzy effect unless you are at least 10 or so mW and a visible beam suggests 50mW+.

Hmm doubt it would be anything close to 50mW. The beam is only just visible in pitch black and I have to be staring down along the laser pointer to see it. Id like other opinions on this if possible from their experiance with the violet lasers. Is there a way to test the amps output with a multimeter. I have a small meter but it doesnt register anything no matter what its hooked upto when measuring amps. Think its to crappy.

Sorry. There is no way to tell without a laser power meter. This is one of the reasons I want to check one out. If these are more powerful but "listed" as 1mW so they can be imported into Oz, we need to know so people won't be shining a 50mW laser light around like a toy. I sure don't care if they are more powerful. I sell lasers MUCH more powerful than this. I just want to make sure people aren't harmed because they just didn't know.

We need someone to evaluate these modules.

Aggred. The output should be tested. What does the testing process involve? Just looked at the manual that came with it. It has some boxes that say -

CE - FDA- RoHs - PAHs
Also it says - Global ISO 9001:2000 and UKAS QUALITY MANAGMENT 039.

It must be a boost and buck (BB code may be a clue :) ), can you get any idea of the current draw of the LD by measuring the ma from the battery indirectly with a 1ohm with BB circuits?

Looks like a NewWish bluray or at least they use the same hosts.

Would be interessting if they could sell the drivers only in bulk packs 8-)

I agree. In my experience, a 5mW blu-ray is pretty dim, and certainly no visible beam..

Why would that circuit be buck-boost, if it's only boosting current? You as a manufacturer don't want to pay a penny more than you need. I must say, that pot looks like mighty good fun to turn as far as possible  ;D. If the beam is only visible from behind then it could be up to 50mw - my green pointer at 100 chinese mw (no known conversion rate except via a power meter) is much more visible when you're looking down it. I know it can't be compared exactly because of perceived brightness though. From memory, an 85mw blu-ray one had a clear beam in darkness with a visible beam in semi-darkness, and could light matches instantly and smoke paper.

An odd theory I had is that receipt paper, sharpied black, could be a good universal and simple power meter. Obviously it wouldn't be an accurate test, but we could record the extent of damage our laser does when focused on a receipt, obviously the more powerful the laser the more immediate and severe the damage is. An issue is that sharpie ink can be seen through in 532nm - when I shine a green pointer unfocused on my desk, using goggles I can see the burn marks beneath the sharpie scribbles.

That doesn't seem to be the same laser pointer..... The labels are not the same....
and there is no price... ::)
