  • Oh yeah GSS it sucks so much here in Oklahoma!! And on top of that our air conditioner in my house is working overtime and still can't seem to get it below 78 in the house :( either my air conditioner has lost pressure and isn't pumping out the cold air fast enough or it's because I have an elevated house. Luckily for me and my girlfriend, our room gets down to 70 thanks to the ac being 2 feet away from our room :)
It is quite common to see Tatra trucks in regular service like 30 - 40 years (even more) and still in great conditions. As basically everything (with air cooled engines) can be repaired (with some exageration) only with hammer, there is no wonder it works great. Simple, durable...
I'm always amazed when I see some oldtimers and how awesome, simple and inovative solutions are found there. Little details, but if you consider the ideas behind, it makes you wonder... For example I would appreciate possibility to start engine with starting handle in nowadays vehicles as emergency solution in winter. My Tatra and even quite "recent" Tatra 603 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatra_603) have electronic starter as well as handle. I mostly use handle to start - it is much more comfortable and easier than it looks like. ;)
No problem. You might ask me for more. And if you have some trip to Europe and Czech republic - let me know. There is a very nice museum focussed on Tatras in Koprivnice. And the chasis is even very advanced now, since it exactly copies terrain and you almost always have full traction (no wheel in the air). That is basically not possible with some other solutions with firm frames. The central tube carries all weight of vehicle and load and protects the shaft system (as seen in the videos), what makes vehicle very durable. No bending occurs as wheels are attached to the central tube and not to the supportive frame (in the "corners") carrying vehicle body and cabin. With this solution the vehicle life is incredibly long in heavy duty conditions.
Also there are air cooled engines up to Euro 5 made by Tatra. There is even project for Euro 6 air cooled engine. Nowadays they make only heavy terrain trucks. In history they were even one of the first who come with aerodynamic body (falling drop inspired) and since Hans Ledwinka (inventor of chasis as well) was friend with Ferdinand Porsche, so the shape of famous VW beetle (as well as Tatra V570 - prototype and further models) was basically developed by both of them. :D Here I added some links for you.

And my favourite car from current production:

Yes, that exactly is. And I'm not sure about the sound, but it definitely sounds awesome. :D What makes Tatra unique is its chasis - central backbone tube with drive shaft inside and independend half axles. Entire chasis is firm and great in terrain (very durable, no bending, torsion etc.). No better conception has been invented yet. It is like lego - modular. You can have as long chasis as you wish. The longest was 16x8 AFAIK but there is no problem to have 16x16 or more. It was customer's demand to have only 16x8.
Sorry for answering now, it was a busy week for me. Unfortunately evening before departure day I was just returning with my Tatra 52 from 1933 from petrol station and just before the gate to my property huge oil leakage occured. It was beyond short time repair as it was around engine shaft and in addition some welded joint cracked in oil system. So I could not drive the oldtimer this journey now. But I took normal car just to go there. It was from Bratislava to Vienna (here it started) to Koprivnice. 120 year anniversary of car manufacturing in Koprivnice. A big event a lot of oldtimers. It was pitty as everything was ready, still we enjoyed it a lot.

Regarding batts yes it is a bit different with laserpainting as I might forget some laser was running too long and than there might be a problem. Still according to my experience with unprotected batts and undervoltage it was ok so far, but I did not try hard enough to make them blow up obviously. :D
Still special caution is needed and I just estimate how long I've used laser based on my experience with its consumption and batt capacity. If they are likely running low - I change them.

Damn - 60 characters over limit. Sorry for spam. :D
It is always killing, when waiting for laser, but now I feel it differently. Maybe it is because a lot of stuff is in front of me and done... No time to get bored. :D

And do not worry, maybe I'll post some experiences from the journey here in some special thread. Just to share it.

    Anyway: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatra_(company)

What about you and batts? I changed my mind on unprotected batts. I think they are much better under special conditions. For example in low temperatures they are not killed by protection for low voltage that much. Since they warm after a while and internal resistance therefore lowers the laser can run normally, still if they are killed all the times they cannot warm. I noticed this when I needed my Sky Lasers 800 mW at 532 nm and no protected batts worked. Just unprotected were able to beat the low temperature.
