Quote from GreenMechanic.............SUCCESS with this one. 896mW using stock Aixis lens. Very impressive!
Hooked up the thermocouple to do the 1 min. heat test. At around 40 seconds I saw smoke coming from the module. OH NO! What now?
Turns out I just melted the lens.
So I am on hold until I get the glass lens from you. ...end quote

JUST a FYI guys- Chuck said melting the arcylic could cause residue issue on your 445 diode windows--so be careful..

ALSO great care should be taken w/LPMs and digital cameras I imagine.

ps ..I will have 'new' glass lens in stock soon.

I tell everyone that the stock acrylic lens is only included to protect the diode during shipment. You MUST replace the acrylic lens with a glass lens

Dude I think this is the first time anyone smoked a lens because of the high output. We hear about the diode getting killed, now it's the stock acrylic lenses getting killed.

:wtf:  WOW ! just wow!

We've been burning out acrylic lenses since the first 8X laser was built. Granted that they don't usually "smoke" the lens. They just burn through. They will smoke the rear aperture of the older lenses though. :eg:

Right. Wow, IT's kind of funny but scary to have a lens smoke. We are playing with some serious optical power here.

I have been using the acrylic lens up to now, I liked it because it put out a little more power than the glass lens (older one from a red laser) I haven't really ran the Laser for long at all though.

After reading some other posts about this and this thread I have removed the stock acrylic lens and put the glass one back on it. I looked very carefully with a magnifier glass and can't detect any damage to the acrylic lens, so I guess because of the short cycle I got lucky.
No more though, I really don't want to ruin my diode, so I'm going with the experts on this.

I'm waiting on a glass 445nm lens like most others, so the glass one from a red will have to suffice for now.

Yeah!! WOW--that IS some crazy high power-- as Dave told me and I agree especially for indoor/home use-- 500mWs is actually enough if not too much- 1 watt is of course NOT 2X the 'brightness' of a 500mW and it is so blindlingly bright I would think one could not w/o a LPM know which was which.

So if you have not gotten them--GET YOUR PROPER EYEWARE NOW!!!

And just like phrs 6,8, 12XBRs-Burning Reds-all Greens, etc, keep them locked away from the kids and idiots--

Just a note on LPM's:

If you're concerned, just defocus the laser some to decrease the power density. Even a setup like MarioMaster's $50 DIY TEC-based LPM can still handle a relatively large amount of power if you're careful with focus. :)

How then do you double the brightness of 500mw? 2 watts?
I always thought:
2mw double brightness of 1mw
4mw double brightness of 2mw
16mw double brightness of 8mw
64mw double brightness of 32mw
1024mw double brightness of 512mw

?????

Using a stock acrylic at the moment, havn't had the laser on for longer than 20 secs at a time since I've only got an old dorcy heatsink to put it in while I choose which host I want to go with.

Is it possible to use the lens from a DX 200mW dilda, or will I need to get hold of a whole new glass lens?

Double power isn´t the same as double brightness.
You need about 4x the power for 2x brigthness. But this is just an approximate formula, the value changes with the wavelength a bit.

What about the lens that's in front of the 445nm diodes in the casio projector? I remember reading somewhere that all 24 diodes in the array have some sort of lens in front of them... could these be used instead of the stock lens of the aixiz modules?

The Aixiz stock 405nm glass lens has the ability to make the 445nm casio "more round". IMO although again w/out a meter I can't verify the intensity comparison.

I have 1 445nm bild so far set at 434mA and as bright as I would evey want one.

Dave anyone, what are we calling these for now? and also with all the info... I keep asking
(please and thank you) for macro of the diode from a member with the abilty to do so.

I can't see if there is a code bar on these diodes for comparision. If this seems pushy
it's becouse I'm getting a little flusterd:thinking: from all the noise vs real info. If you know what I mean.

Read What Jayrob has posted on the stock Casio lens--except the advantage that glass has over acrylic- no degradation and easier to clean-the stock Casio lens is not very useful. I will try to take a macro photo of a diode and the stock casio lens and post it today.

I must have been lucky. I ran my 445 at 950mA for 5 mins at a time with an acrylic aixiz lens and it never smoked. My diode lens is clean, and I ran maybe 20 or so sessions by now, 5 mins at a time...So maybe i got a special lens? It is acrylic, I never ordered a special glass one...
