All we really need to know is the wavelength shifts when in a handheld heatsink saturated with heat, and the current we could run these at in handhelds.

Everyone cool with this idea?

Buying numbers would be nice.

And people who already donated getting numbers depending on the amount they spent like Smeerworst (donated $40) may choose numbers 27-67 - so if the winning number is inside this range, he gets the diode.

Id say the numbers would just go in order of the posts. It would be too much hassle to keep track of all the numbers different people have called.

This is probably the best idea. We shouldn't kill it if there are only a few of these that will ever be on the market. Now one more person will get to own and appreciate one of these unique diodes. Lazereer already has some info on these diodes anyway, and he has already kindly given me a lot of advice on operating them.

The fact that it is easy to manipulate the wavelength on these makes me very excited.

Adding the raffle option will get more people to participate, just make sure that nobody mentions a raffle in the PayPal payments!!

I'm already envisioning 20mW of 476nm in a LeadLight host :drool:
My build will look like this if I don't mess up...

I agree on numbering based on order of donation like ben suggested. That would massively simplify it. Also, in case people alter their donated amounts the final numbers shouldn't be given until after all payments are received. That just seems like the easiest and most fair method right?

This is a group buy to buy a direct 473nm diode and test the maximum current and outputs before it dies.

I'm in with $10. Just make sure you don't give up overdriving it too early because of the raffle... If it survives even better but if it doesn't that should be fine as well

I also have serious doubts that this is a "one of a kind" deal.. There's always someone saying that when a new diode appears and within a year or two they get more available and cheaper. Not to mention it wouldn't be economical for Nichia to spend on R&D to make a few and give up manufacturing.
