GB: 473nm diode information / giveaway

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

@Lazereer
The tests will be more for wavelength than power, I've got a spectrometer and can test the shifts when overdriven, warm, cold ect. :p

How did you get it to shift all the way to 488nm?

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

Well just be careful because there is a very short tolerance in mW vs Currant where threshold is and at 20mW. Use a driver.:) Because most Variable power supplier increase in 5mA and thats to much.:)

I wont spoil the fun. I know your more then capable of testing.:) But you will be surprised how far you can shift it.:)

Thats not a 473nm diode in the pic silly.:p

Thats a TRUE 488nm diode.:)

I have both 473nm diodes & 488nm diodes.

I have no prob letting arg keep it as long as he thoroughoughly tests it :)

(Extra ough for emphasis)

I think most of us just want to know how high the wl will go at higher powers.

When the curve flattens out or it dims if its still alive he should keep it. No need to purposely kill it after the tests.

Man that 488 diode is sweet! I love 488 :)

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

How much did your 488nm Diode cost? If you don't mind my asking....if you do sorry for asking.

Thanks for the tips! :) I will be sure to use a driver with multi turn pots for fine adjustment.

Also, 488nm diode! Awesome! :D I didn't even know a hobbyist had one of those yet. Have you made it into a pointer? My arms are getting tired from carrying my argon laser and a generator.
Once again, you get all the awesome stuff :p

Wouldn't feel right keeping a diode I didn't pay for. Would have to kill it to be fair. :p

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

I would be more interested in a 488nm diode if we could get our hands on one instead of the 473nm?

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

Or you could raffle it off at the end with each person getting the same number of entries as how many dollars donated to the GB.....that sounds fair.... lol.

No I dont mind. I payed under 1K for each 488nm diode i have:)

Yeah i almost made the fatal mistake and used my (JDS diode supply) that is not in <1mA increments as its a high currant diode driver. Lucky i caught that. I just used an ADJ X-Drive.:) I CUSTOM set the MAX Currant with the set resistors on a driver so it would never see any higher currant then the datasheet says. There for i could never over drive it even if i turned the pot by mistake. If my memory service right its like 20mA to 25mA or so from threshold to somewhere ~15mW-20mW. The higher the currant the faster it will increase in power.

I got the diodes many months back. SOmeone linked me to this thread as they new i had these already.:) I had not had the time to finish the write up. I took all the diodes pictures of the 488nm and close ups and I was going to do a nice post on both the 473 and 488 diode but too late.:p No big-E.:) Ill still do the 488 one though if there is still intrest to see it.:)

The reason why i say dont kill it is that this is just a rare case. You probably will not see any of these diodes again unless they come up again surplus. Which you never know when that will be. There is not many of these if thats what anyone thinks.

There was not alot of the 473nm and very little 488's to begin with... So i personally would take care of any of these rare diodes that are popping up.(Its Lucky that they even popped up as most got bought up privately)

There is nothing wrong about keeping the diode at the end. You are the tester. You can do as you wish per the unwriten rules for those who still fallow and respect them. All iam saying is you gain nothing for killing it at the end and i know i would be much happier to know that its still allive with you.:) Just my 2 cents.

Speaking of "raffle it off" guess what I just bought :D

Impatiently awaiting your results, ARG!

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

I fully agree with Lazeerer about not killing it if its unnecessary. No need if we don't really gain any knowledge. Once you see the efficiency curve you can know that there isn't any real gain after a certain point and then just stop there and preserve the diode. Hell, it might be a good idea to then sell the diode to someone on LPF and split the proceeds equally between yourself and donation to the site?

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

Hey Lazeerer if you ever feel like selling one of the 488 diodes I will always be here :D shameless heads up

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

I say raffle it off like wbs said! $1/chance.

And I just quadrupled my money in roulette on my casino app so im feeling lucky :p You guys better watch out!

I only have 2 so its hard to judge right now what i plain on doing with at least the second one. Though i might be getting more in. We see.:) Lets just say i get a head start usually.

I will keep that in mind.:)

Cool thing is its surplus pricing.:) I love it.!

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund

*cough* don't forget about your friendly neighbor WL hunter. I am always going to be interested in one of these.

That goes for 473 and 488 ;)

LOL.

I might have something you would want more. Its not a HeCD though. But.!, it is way cheaper then your <1K request.;)

Ill PM you when i get back. (Going to DD for a Tea) :p

No guessing.:na:
