Two "VERY" large pieces of aluminum! Help?

So I have these two pieces of aluminum...so I was this thinking. What should I use them for. About the only thing I can think of using them for very massive heatsinks. But I want to hear some suggestions from the forum. I can possibly get some one to machine it or machine it myself.

Anyway let me hear your opinions.

Edit: I'm probally going to use them as a rather large heatsink....probably going to make my 1st 445 diode in it and run it really hot....

I recently found out i have access to a lathe so i will just "attempt" machine & polish it myself with some help. (ok i lie....probably alot of help as i never machined anything lol)

So heres a photo & dimensions are listed above it.

8" wide x 1 1/8" (im pretty sure thats how one & one 8th is laid out)

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

You could use it as a paperweight. No labor, time, or cost involved :na:

Peace,
dave

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

I'm sure massive heatsink would work if you have a drill press, start with oil and a small bit and go up to whatever size fits your AIXIZ house.

I cant help you with the other part, I dont get a lathe until December :D

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

Well I don't think I have quite a stack of papers big enough, but I guess there's a time for everything! :)

JBTM I am unsure if it will fit in a lathe, it is about the size of a Frisbee. You would have to tell me if it would fit because I don't know. I got it from work where we cut 12" aluminum bars. We also machine them with industrial lathes. If a heat sink would work and be the most appropriate thing than that's what it shall be. I was also thinking I could maybe use it for some kind of mount. Just an idea Π.Π

Mabye I will a Guy from work work the center of it out and I can press fit a smaller longer piece of aluminum in to make a really nice labby. Keep the ideas coming :)

Silvershot, I actually thought about that! It really sounds like a good idea. If I do make a flabby out of it I will make sure I run the diode as hot as possible. With the proper safety ofc ;)

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

I'd like to point out that it isnt exactly a large chunk of aluminum. during this week my company participated in a bankruptcy buyout when a aluminum specialist company went belly up and we bought a round tree trunk of the stuff, approx 8 feet in lenght and almost 1 foot in diameter ( 25 cm or so). Now that makes for a helluva heatsink :D

but what to do with your stick of aluminium... perhaps a kubotan with a laser in the other end

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

The problem with that is my piece of aluminum is more of a disk.

If I had a piece that big I would make a laser/club lol.

Now I do know the type of pieces your talking about. We have the "same" tree size pieces at work.

I basically work in a giant machine shop. We make explosives/parts for the military. So I have prettymuch seen all kinds of metal bars. The piece I have is a cutoff of one of them tree sized pieces you speak of :)

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

the one we bought will be used for brake spacers in rallycars, enough for us to get 12 cars rolling and we paid like 250$ for it. So sadly no mega laser but oh man the laser that would need that bad boy as a heatsink would be a "proper burner" in the megawatt range. Now thats what i call a laser, but sadly it could hardly be called a laser pointer... unless you are a giant.

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

445 diodes product the most heat I have seen. The chunk you got there would be a very nice heatsinking ;)

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

Ok guys, i updated it with a little bit of info and a pic. Im still looking for ideas!

Re: Large chunk of aluminum

drill 24 12mm holes in it and stick 24 Aixiz modules in there with 445's in em in a nice pattern and you will have a 445 cannon that will burn doors down

Two "VERY" large pieces of aluminum

i wonder what kind oh meyham i could cause with a 445 cannon :eg:

I added another photo because i got another piece of aluminum. I also needed a bump :)

Still completely unsure what they would be good for.
