I kind of fake it. I'll use the zoom sometimes for macros. It works about half the time.

Are you playing with poisonous snakes? Because they look poisonous. Maybe my nature skills have left me though ---No way!!!:undecided:-the one in my hand is a harmless Coachwhip-a member of the Racer family--and although their bite is a tad painful- I dislike being crapped/pissed on much more--very strong odor- part of their defence--the other two were Copperheads that my neighbors Guinea Fowls killed-- the snakes got caught up in her plastic netting she has around her birds to keep the babies from wandering off.


Nice pics! I used to use the lens from a telescope for point-and-shoot camera macro shots.

True, but their expression is fixed-never changes- and they never blink either(no eyelids)-- it opened its mouth a couple times but perhaps sensed that I meant it no harm and allowed me to cut away the netting--took a long drink of water and when I released it -took off without as much as a 'thanks'. :wtf:

I fear drunk and texting/cellphone-talking drivers way more that even the vemonous snakes here in Texas. BTW I handle Coral snakes the same as the Coachwhip - but do not recommend that to the unexperienced.

We all know people who have died in car accidents- but from snakebite?? And the vast majority bitten were either messing with the snakes or in the act of killing them:tsk:--live and let live is my motto.:yh:---hak

Thanks. It's a Canon XS with the 18-55mm kit lens. I need a new lens though, because this one isn't very sharp and macro is my best area.

nice shots, particularly the head-on of the toad... and that with an 18-55... ! Not that the 18-55 is a bad lens - in fact, it's a very good lens and has been favorably reviewed!

If you want true macro, I recommend the EF-S 60 USM (which is my Macro). The lens produces a very nice Bokeh, it's very sharp even at f/2.8 and is quite small and easy to handle (and at 1:1, a true macro lens). It's my primary lens when shooting laser reviews.

Should you already be thinking about stepping up to FF someday, then have a look at the EF 100 f/2.8 USM Macro. It's Canon's revered 1:1 L lens... :bowdown:

Hak those copper heads are huge! I've only seen a few that big.

I have found only three others her in Tx(20yrs) and one in Fl(7 yrs)- and i am on the lookout for snakes everywhere I go and used to go on 'snake hunts' in my younger days, All were slightly larger but not by much.

Under a rotten stump I turned over I once found a pair in the act of mating. and NO i did not kill them, just in case anyone wants to know. I gently put the stump back over them and was glad I did not find them by getting bitten.

My only bite ever came from a three day old pygmy rattlesnake which resulted in minor swelling of the finger bitten and required no medical atttention-thank God. It was slightly larger than an earthworm and only bit me because of my carelessness.

Where I live you can find them pretty much everytime you try, but most of the ones I see are about 2 to 3 feet. I do kill them when I get a chance because they bite my dogs. One time I even had to step on ones head and kill him with my benchmade(I was wearing snake boots).

well I guess if you ever get bitten it will be payback--I do you understand, however about yr dogs tho-have your dogs ever actually received a bite??/

I sure killed a bunch of misc snakes when I was a kid although I am in no way proud of that fact.

I mean no offence to anyone but those who go out of there way to run over a poor snake in the road are just plain mean, and sadly mistaken if they think they are being macho.

Yes, they have several times right on the nose... I've had many snakes as pets from grass snakes to coach whips. Unlike most people I was raised to kill only venomous snakes, and let the harmless ones be. Yes, I guess it would be karma. Oh well, I can deal with it.

what is the f (aperture) value? i thought 18-55 only goes to 3.5? that looks good for a f3.5

The advertised f number is the minimum aperture. My lens goes up to f/36. That particular pic was taken at f/9.

The only NON-venomous snakes I play with are gardeners, they're just fun to play with, freaks people out. Couple years ago there was evidently a family of rattlers in the ditch next to our school, I'd play with the lil rattlers, they're kinda fun to mess with, if you got good reflexes You gotta be able to KNOW when you're TOO close, on the boundry of them striking, but you having enough time to get back, then they roll up all pissed off, if I wanted to catch em, I'd have to do it before then...when they coil up it's too late, they're too angry at you to think you won't hurt em :crackup: I always laugh at people who'd call me stupid, stupid for what? Liking the adrenaline rush of messing with water mockasines (back when we lived in Florida) and rattlers? Nah, I just like to know that I can beat the one thing that could kill me in one flash, one blink, and you're dead, I enjoy that rush. Lol, if I see that they're might be a snake on the edge of the pond I'm at, I'm not ther one that backs up, I get a closer look, it's more of an "Oh yeah, it's game time" kinda feeling. I don't kill snakes though, anything that can kill and eat something bigger than them has my respect, I don't kill them, never have. I almost was able to get a corn snake + enclosure, but my mom said 'Only anything smaller than 16"' I was all :wtf: I told her that corn snakes get to 3.5-5' and that they're completely harmless, one of the best starter snakes, and if they bite, it only burns, it's not harmful in any way. But when I said "up to 5 feet" she like had a temper tantrum....saying "well, what if it eats the cats" it can barely eat a rat when full grown, how is it going to eat a freakin CAT?! Ugh, I hate that I can't ever EXPLAIN myself...
