To see most of the rated capacity of an alkaline nine volt, it would have to be used in a device using < 20mA of current. Alkaline batteries don't fare so well in high drain devices - you won't realize most of the capacity before the voltage has sagged to the point the regulator doesn't work. rechargeables and Lithium batteries are a better bet for these devices cuz they have a flat discharge rate until the end.
 
Man that took me a long time to catch up from page 22 or whatever it was when I left for vacation. Just to let everyone know, that longterm test diode is still going at 90mA with only about a 2 hour break a couple weeks ago.

All the diodes will be actively cooled and mode stabilized probably using a master/slave arrangement or Fabry-Perot etelons. I'm really glad I don't have to pay for all of this haha. I am guessing that the prototype will cost us upwards of $10k to put together. This isn't too bad though since theyre paying like $5k per 300mW 453nm blue they have right now.

It looks like you've developed a diffractive optical element that selectively filters the light so the Si cell (they look like monocrystalline Si PV cells) gets radiation tuned for their bandgap. More efficient generation of power, less heat. It may also allow you to get away from expensive tracking scheme - the panel can stay fixed in one position.

Why do you need the laser - to assure optimal focus?
 
This has been a nice informative thread. I'd like to summarize the relevant parts in the first post. If you have any info that isn't there, pm or post a summary here and I'll include it.
 
I'd suggest a pin-out diagram (I just got some, so I'm currently looking around for one).... and without reading the 37 other pages, I think I remember people saying they connect the photodiode (middle/case pin) to ground?

I just connected up with the pin-out I found in another thread, not connecting the "photo-diode" pin, and it works :)

Wow, it's a lot brighter. Not so apparent on non-fluorescing material, but you hit something that fluoresces and BAM that thing is SUPER-bright!

the long term diode is still running. It's been over a month straight with about 3 hours down time to rearrange the lab. We turned it up to 100mA today and will keep bumping it up every 3 days or so till it dies I think. On a side note. I finally got around to building my own! So much cooler when it's not stuck in the lab. Only took me 3 diode to get it working too. ::) Good thing I get paid This week and can buy a bunch from geeks.com

climbak, I went searching back about 10 pages and couldn't find the details...Could you please make known the conditions of this test again?

803T diode running constatly at 90mA's?
Heatsink?
How many hours/days now?

I don't remember off the top of my head exactly when we started it, but I think it was the 6th of May. It's been running at 90mA give or take a few the entire time save for the break mentioned with no heatsinking other than the one from the sled. I'll be back in the lab sometime this week so I will try and remember to check the actual time elapsed. I may take a picture or two as well, although it's nothing exciting visually. We have it powering a wristwatch using a photodiode to set a trigger voltage using op-amps. By the way, thanks for the heatsink. Works great just like the red!

Man!....I can't believe that! Let me get this straight.... You've got an 803T diode running at 90mA's, only in it's tiny stock heatsink, for like a month straight?!!!

Haha, yeah. I wanted to heatsink it, but my professor didn't want to wait for me to make one, so he slapped the circuit together one day while I was in classes and never gave me a chance. Talk about a awesome duty cycle though. I think the whole reason we're turning it up now is the test has become boring. We need the danger and excitement of more and more current.
 
I have a short collection of laser diode drivers. Most of them are battery powered.
I will add some more. Some of current controlled drivers are taking care of light received by the photodiode.
(unfortunately I can't add links yet) who's interested I will send the address to pm
 
add another ten days to that test then, which makes it a very sturdy diode. Tell the prof, he can have a different diode, this one is going into a host for a pointer. Since it's proven to be sooo reliable. BTW. What output power are you getting at 120ma?
