The Golden Company: LPF's Compendium of the Rare Yellows, from Chartreuse to Amber.

In this post, it was my original goal to build a comprehensive list of members with 589 and 594 nm lasers, with links to reviews where available. However, members objected to the lack of other yellow wavlengths, which also led to a desire for chartreuse (555-568) to be included (as it is as 'yellow' as 594). While my original intent was only the two wavelengths that we call 'gold', I am but a humble servent of this community and I shall willingly and gladly bow to this pressure.

Also to be added, will be a list of reputable places in which a member can buy a laser of the Golden Company.

Comment or message me to be added to the list! Let's build a useful resource to help anyone interested in these rare and unusual lasers! I'll try to find reviews and info, but there's no way I could make this comprehensive without your help.

I've got the two 589's that are in my signature, a 50mW Dragonlasers Spartan, and an 80mW CNI PGL-Iii-C.
Would definitely love to add a nice 593.5 to the list.

I got my 589 spartan!!! I don't have a review though. I never really got much into super details. Now I'm getting super into projection which has limited my time here sadly. I'll come back around though.

Well, I suppose that's up to the community. If you all want them included, I'm certainly not opposed to it, but I had always thought of them as more of a green.

I'm the new proud owner of Styro's 589nm. From his link:

I love this laser, but I have two 589nm units so one deserves to go to a home where it will get more use! On cold startup (3.8V from DC PSU) it hovers around the 85mW mark for one minute. Apparently it likes running cooler, because in summer it runs ~30mW lower. Still a good laser, runs TEM00 and fairly stable for a 589nm unit.

not complete by any means, but definitely interesting. should make one of 561nm owners. its probably substantially smaller. :beer:

Interesting idea.

Though 589nm and 594nm (HeNe/DPSS) are not the only kinds of yellow lasers. I'm sure at least someone here has build an N2 pumped static dye laser, and I heard planters built a raman-shifted vanadate laser (I don't know if it was doubled though, couldn't find anything more on this).

Or if someone has a 577nm OPSL they're not sharing with us... :bowdown:

Also my 594nm HeNe does about 4mw in case you want to add that.

does 556/561 count as yellow?

Yelow is generally considered to be anything in the range as follows:
Color - yellow
Wavelength - 570–590 nm
Frequency - 508–526 THz
Photon energy - 2.10–2.17 eV

593.5 or 594nm is in the "orange" spectral range, however, for LPF purposes "orange" lasers might as well be included in "yellow" for LPF practical and informational purposes.

So...sure--why not? 556/561 is within the "green" spectral range but could be included on same basis as "orange", I guess-as part of a unique "LPF defined yellow spectral range" as long as LPF is redefining the yellow spectral range.

Very cool idea. I'd include 561/56 just for the heck of it, it is so rare there can't be too many out there.


Maybe we could also add a short addendum at the bottom, a list linking to all known companies that currently sell 556/61 and 589/94 portables.

I agree, though I'd prefer 561 was separate due to its exclusivity?

Though frankly...561 is basically green but it's really got a strong yellow hue. It's just considered yellow from the old days of gas lasers when in practicality yellow could only be had from a dye laser or copper...and even then, even 578 has the tiniest bit of green to it at low power. So 568 (krypton) and 594.1(HeNe) were also considered "yellow". Heck 594 is more yellow than 561 is. 568 does look yellowish at very high power, but even then it's still quite green. Cameras even see it as green...I personally consider yellow to be about 575-600nm. 594 is still pretty yellow, but 604 is definitely a strong yellow-orange, but more orange than yellow.

But that's just my opinion.

Really close to buying one of these for $30 a little over a week ago. Looked a bit rough and didn't have the complicated driver, so I passed. I was kicking myself when I looked up the specs later on though. Would have at least been really cool to open up.

Oh well. I'll have to finish my TEA laser and get some rhodamine in a cuvette.

I'd love to own one of those if it was working. I've seen a few pop up for reasonable prices once in a long while. They're not really practical around the house though. The beam quality is pretty poor except for laser shows. They're ugly multimode big time and a pain to run. Pretty color though. You can't open them without damaging them though... IIRC they're sealed with inert gas. Else they burn up fast.
