A Darwin Award is very coveted and not so easy to achieve....
I remember there was some kid on the 'laser community' rolleyes forum, defending how it was 'no big deal' to shine lasers at planes, and insinuating that people should do it to 'prove' that 'nothing happens'.
Education is one thing, yeah, but I think there are a lot of things we simply don't have much control of, and those are going to be the ones that cause us to have to pay for the actions of others.
I cant see a ban IMHO only the need for a licence. People drive drunk but yet they don't ban cars, people shoot each other but don't ban guns, it's just the minority of stupid people who are giving us safe and responsible laserist a bad name !
When I look at the future I see thses as the two possibilities. I however think it will most likely be a complete ban to even own these devices. When I think about the expense and commitment of starting a licensing program, then at the ease of simply banning the ownership of such devices, I see the government taking the easy road.
I think the endgame will eventually be:
A felony to own or possess any 100mW or greater laser
A felony/fine for selling any such device within the USA
Illegal to harvest diodes from projectors and illegal to sell diodes by any private citizen for hobby use.
Think it's far fetched? I thought I would never see the day when the government was allowed to fondle your kids as long as they had a TSA uniform on to. I also thought I would never see the day when a government could force you to buy health insurance, or tell you what you could or could not eat because of the health risks....that day is on the horizon, and so is laser regulation.
My former employer had a letter from BATF hung on his wall stating they did not care one bit about his massive spud launcher. It seems they determined they did not have jurisdiction. The letter wished him luck at setting a world record with it and to have fun.

Image of more laser stupidity
""This skin burn was caused by a 800mW laser ,the image is from unverified source on a forum of a lad drunk and using hand portable laser, class 4 , 445nm""
This is just self-mutilation. It has nothing to do with lasers as it's a psychological disorder.
In this case it could simply be due to the alcohol, but if he didn't have a laser he probably would of inflicted harm on himself with something else, like a disposable razor.
Why would that make it any different? He still falls into the category of "doing a retarded thing irresponsibly with a laser". And so what ever factors are behind it doesn't really matter do they?
