Slang terms for diodes as I understand them...

This thread is about all diodes but as the bulk being handled/harvested these days are 445 here goes...

Plz correct me --- anyone...:na:

DOA -...totally not working--good for soldering practice only. RIP little buddies!

Dud- :yabbem:working but not very well or at least way below the better ones.

Freak- :beer:the best -- high efficient and what we would all like to have.

Zombie- :cryyy:the living dead worse than a dud but better than a LEDed(THX DTR)

LEDed-:undecided: costs like a laser diode but looks like a LED.

Wavelength Freak- occasionally a diode is found to be of a higher or lower nm.(thnx Haloblu)

Damaged window- loose window or otherwise NG,,, like burnt-on teflon tape or thermal paste or from a melted/smoked acrylic lens etc- in some cases still usable once de-canned but extra care must be taken to keep clean and a shorter life is to be perhaps expected.

If you suddenly see new scatter/artifacts/etc -AFTER YOU HAVE REMOVED THE BATTERIES OR THE POWER SOURCE-take a very close look at the widow w/ a lupe/loop instead of continuing to use and thereby doing more damage.(Thnx Daguin- as always- SAFETY FIRST)

Some of the above was learned by me the hard way

Dont forget about the Zombie - Lases but @ very low power and extremely poor efficiency.

I think DOA means "Dead on arrival", as in arrived in the mail but doesn't work. Your description still works though.

Thats what I mean by DOA- dead from day one. They sometimes are found that way in the C***o arrays- one guy got four like that all in the same array. Rotten luck!!!

But still a very low percentage overall. And perhaps as many Freaks as Doas.

I have not found a dead one in an array yet(knock on wood) and have had only one report of a zombie which was taken with a bit of skepticism based on who it was reporting it. The worst I have seen in one of my first arrays there were three diodes in a row that had their windows just flopping around in the can. I guess the machine was out of glue

Also if a diode does go open circuit in the array the whole chain of 6 would be out as they are run in series.

High (or Low) Wavelength Freak!
Tho it certainly can be used for any type of diode, I can't recall hearing it ever used outside of 405nm.
Extra apparent brightness is always welcome, but I love both high & low 405 freaks myself.
There is just something fun about a seemingly 'weak' looking low freak lighting up as it hits fluorescent surfaces.

Dave's warning rings true...

The one "hole" I got in my vision was from a Nichia LED, where I was looking at the die under a lens trying to get it to 'half light' and illuminate green instead of blue. Turned the pot a touch too much and blammo. I saw the afterimage for about a week, and that kind of 'settled' into a dark spot that i can see, especially when I'm tired.

I burnt my retina with an *LED*. Not even a high-flux LED. A 5MM through-hole blue one. Granted, a pretty bright one - narrow angle, projected a spot on the house across the street.

I KNOW i've told the above story before but I do bring it out every once in a while because I know there may be someone new here reading this, "Bah, a little laser diode? It can't REALLY blind you, can it?"

Yes. Simple through-hole garden variety high brightness LEDs can permanently hurt your vision. Laser light out of a diode, raw, is uncollimated -- but collimation and focus of it is easily done. Sometimes unintentionally. Close enough to the window, your own eye does it.

For a good rundown of how to handle a IIIB or IV laser, basically - look over some gun handling videos or writeups/tutorials with a few modifications.

For a certain job I had, i had to go through a handgun safety course. I'm not a huge gun person myself, but it was very enlightening.

And it was beneficial, as I handle my laser the same way now. "Don't point your gun at anything you would have a problem destroying", they said. A laser likely won't destroy a beam dump or a tree, but if you keep that in mind as far as living things go, it's not too bad.
